-title and credits-

Text was made using Trajan Pro font, hand modified in Photoshop CS2. Two versions, white text on transparent background and transparent text on black background were then imported into Adobe Premiere 1.5 to be animated using keyframed motion, distortion, opacity and blur effects.

Video was created using a shot of Dean screaming in 2x01 "In My Time of Dying", layered over an indistinct flash taken from Sam's vision in 2x09 "Croatoan." Luma key was applied to the shot of Dean. Color modification effects were applied during various steps in the process.

-body of the vid-

Roughly 1/3 of the clips in the vid underwent color modification. All clips in the vid, without exception, underwent speed changes. This is partly because I'm just that anal about timing and partly because certain episodes were imported into Premiere with the wrong framerate, making them play faster than realtime.

Noteworty effects:
1:27 has a shot of John, who is possessed, turning to look at Dean pointing a gun at him. I tried to make it look like Dean was being reflected in the window behind John. I took the clip shown directly prior to this clip and ran it backwards so it looked like Dean, who had just raised his gun, was now lowering it. I flipped the shot horizontal and threw on a luma key and some mild distortion to make it look like a reflection, shifted the frame until Dean's face was in the right part of the window. I then made an image file in Photoshop, painting in black wherever I wanted additional transparency, and imported the file into the clip of Dean as a simple image matte, thereby removing any unwanted overlap of the two shots.

1:37 has a shot of John being possessed in 1x22 "Devil's Trap" overlayed on a shot of John talking to Dean in the hospital in "In My Time of Dying." It looks like a simple enough overlay, but in fact ended up being one of the most tedious effects in the vid. John's eyes weren't appearing yellow as they were supposed to. The shot was too dark for the viewer to see that he was possessed. I had to make an additional video layer wherein I masked out everything but the eyes, then raised brightness, contrast and saturation so the eyes appeared to be glowing demonically.

1:49 has a shot of Dean in 2x09 "Croatoan". Dean is sitting in a well lit room in front of a muddy gray wall. I flipped the shot horizontal, used gamma correction and the chroma key to black out the background and then fuzzed the bottom left corner of his neck by covering it with a piece of black video, cut to size with a 4 point garbage matte and blurred.

1:51 has two shots of Dean in 2x22 "All Hell Breaks Loose II" drawing back from Sam's corpse and looking anguished. I used black video again to cover up Dean's flannel shirt and disguise the bottom edge of the shots, then keyframed the shots to shrink from regular size to 70%, to exaggerate the feeling of Dean drawing back.

My intention was to make the shots at 1:51 and the shot at 1:49 appear as if they were part of the same scene.

2:16 has a shot of Sam waking from the dead in 2x22 "All Hell Breaks Loose II" and is the most ostentatious effect in the vid. I accomplished it by using two layers of black video, one for each eye. Each layer had a 16 pt. garbage matte in just the right shape to black out the whites of the eyes while letting the spot of reflected light on each eye show through. A slight blur was applied to fuzz the edges. The mattes were adjusted frame by frame to match the movement of the eyes in the original clip. For the transition, I made two more layers, this time making a matte of the eyes themselves instead of just black video in the shape of the eyes. I keyframed contrast, darkness, and hue over three frames. The end result was a transition wherein it appeared as though black was oozing in from the edges of increasingly bloodshot eyes.

-audio-

Roughly one minute was edited from the song. The number of "You Know You're Right" repetitions at the end were reduced from 17 to 5. In the first chorus, "Pain" is repeated three times. At one point during the editing process, I switched the visuals I had overlaying the first "Pain" to overlay the second "Pain." Once I did that I realized certain drum beats were no longer lining up, so I went ahead and switched the drum beats. Volume was increased in the first portion of the song, before the drums start in.

The sound effect in the beginning title is an excerpt from the end of the song, played backwards.

-additional trivia-

This vid involved approx. 5 weeks of work, spread out over a year.

Premiere crashed roughly 70 times. I had autosaving set to once every 2 minutes. Of course, Premiere might have crashed less if I'd clipped beforehand instead of importing all my episodes wholesale, but. Well. That should tell you just how much I hate clipping.

Editing was originally done with a mix of clean and watermarked footage. Once the final edits were complete, watermarked clips (roughly 1/3 of the vid) were replaced with DVD ripped footage.

And just for fun, here's a list of all my clip repetitions:

You have no idea how impressed I was with the effect of Sam's eyes going black. I went back and watched it frame by frame right after seeing it, then checked the original footage to make sure I didn't just forget it. It looks so good in terms of looking like the real deal from the show, but also because it works so well narratively.

I'll leave you more feedback on the vid itself, but in the meantime, I recced it over in my livejournal. It's an amazing vid.

Aw! Thanks for the rec!

It's funny. I see so many effects heavy vids I wasn't really expecting one and a quarter seconds of Sam's eyes turning black to give anyone pause. I didn't think very far past "this will better illustrate my point." I'm thrilled that it worked so well for you.

I really enjoyed this vid, and I REALLY enjoyed this post. *g* It is seriously priceless, in the nonsarcastic sense, for me as a n00b vidder trying to figure out how all this technical stuff can be *applied,* what specific kinds of things I can do with it, bc right now I'm at the stage where I wouldn't even imagine these kinds of effects and had no idea they *could* be done. So thank you, for the fantastic vid and the education!

I'm so glad you found this post useful! I like to think I'm helping someone with my tech posts. Everything I learned about effects I learned from other people's vids.

Some other posts you might find of use: the making of (http://lierdumoa.livejournal.com/219686.html) for my Girl Anachronism (http://lierdumoa.livejournal.com/217666.html) vid and the making of (http://lierdumoa.livejournal.com/175249.html) for my Teeth in the Grass (http://lierdumoa.livejournal.com/174670.html) vid. Both of those vids had a lot of different color effects.

Oh, very, very cool. I just left you a comment on how I loved the repeating images so it's cool to read how many times what image repeated itself. It's nice to know it was all thought out and planned that way. Very creative!

I don't even know how to express to you how completely this vid blows me away. It's just amazing. I can't stop pressing play. Is it just too done for me to say "oh Dean"? Because OH DEAN.

"My intention was to make the shots at 1:51 and the shot at 1:49 appear as if they were part of the same scene." I think that was successful, definitely. I couldn't place the 1:49 shot until I read this.

I love explanation posts like this! Hearing about the process makes me appreciate it even more.

I love writing explanation posts like this! It legitimizes my navel-gazing.

:P

And it's never too done for you to say "oh Dean." His pain is a vast and endless ocean. I kept thinking I would run out of shots to use to illustrate Dean's various traumas. It kept not happening. The boy has six year old trauma leftovers petrifying at the back of his freezer.
