Vidding Crazy
Aug. 19th, 2004 03:42 pmOkay, so I went to visit
permetaform yesterday evening at a little past 6:00, the original intention to check out some anime vids that had shown up in VividCon. We ended up having a sort of mini-convention of our own and not going to bed until 4:00 in the morning.
When it comes to vidding, we think a lot alike. We look at beat the same way, for one thing. When other people call themselves beat whores, well, I don't think they always mean it the same way we do. We were watching some clip saying "you know, if either of us had been vidding this, each of those bullets would have hit clark on successive beats...and his head shaking afterwards...and then his arm twitch...and then his blink..."
And now that I think of it, probably some of those beats would have had to be inaudible beats. Which is basically when you take two audible beats and put some sort of clip change or internal motion right on the halfway mark -- or even two clip changes/internal motions on the 1/3 and 2/3 point between the two audible beats. You're inventing beats just through clip placement. It doesn't work with everything, but instinct usually tells you when it will work.
In addition to the beat whoredness, our vid ideas tend to be at similar levels of crazy. We tend to feed off each other's insanity. She's convinced me to make (among other things) a Sex and the City vid about Carrie to NOFX's "My Vagina" (yes, it's true -- Carrie's really a man with a sex change). I, in turn, gave her ideas for making a vid for which the source doesn't actually, like, exist. Apparently she cut a deal with
rageprufrock to make a seemingly impossible vid in exchange for the completion of
rageprufrock's major WIP -- String Theory. A lot of our ideas tend to go in the category of "so crazy it just might work."
We had a number of other odd conversations. We talked about how you get a lot of techno vids in Anime, because it's the only sort of media that really supports techno. Bright explosions and flashes and plenty of color and lots of spazzy internal movement. Live action doesn't work nearly as well with that genre of music. At one point we got to talking about over-vidded clips. Most especially, that one in Smallville of Lex with his arms out in the blood rain which I fondly refer to as the "Lex loves you this much" scene.
Question -- has anyone ever vidded "Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing"? Cause it seems to me this song is ideal for vidding. Great lyrics, great beat, interesting emotional arcs concerning the song mood, just...good.
Syd? Call me.
