So I've got this computer that's old as dust. It's my vidding computer. I made all my vids on it. Yes, that's right, I've had this computer for 7+ years. And it's a DELL. Thanks to my having tech savvy friends this computer has lived long, long past its expected shelf life, but it's time for it to go.

My dad has been kind enough to pass me down his very nice less than 3 year old Mac, which will no doubt make a very fine replacement. No, I have no intention of becoming a mac vidder -- I'll be installing XP on it. I've tried Final Cut Pro. I like Premiere and my stockpile of open source software better.

But before I get rid of the dinosaur I have to finish two vid projects. So cross your fingers for me guys. Half an hour in and I've already had to do a system restore because no audio was transmitting to my headphones.

But OMG!

You don't know how awesome it's going to be vidding on a (relatively) new computer. I'll be able to complete a vid without Premiere crashing over 70 times. You don't know how much I wish that statistic was exaggerated.

In other news:

I resisting the urge to make an Uther Pendragon/Troll Queen vid to "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri and re-title it "Jar of Farts."

It's probably a good thing I didn't give into temptation and outbid [livejournal.com profile] mpoetess for Cappy in the VVC auction.

Y'all dodged a bullet, there.

I'm also resisting the urge to procure Smallville mpreg vids for my constructed reality vidshow. Yes, there's more than one. SOMEONE TALK ME OUT OF THIS RIGHT NOW. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH PAIN I CAN INFLICT IN THREE QUARTERS OF AN HOUR.

My VVC panel/vidshow proposal was approved!!! YAAAAAAY!!!

I've been wanting to do this panel for years and years, but I somehow kept missing my window or not having money to attend or some other issue that resulted in this panel not happening.

The subject of my panel/vidshow is constructed reality. Fanfiction for the visual storyteller. That type of thing.

I know most of what I'm putting in the show, but I would like a few recommendations for constructed reality vids that have come out more recently, say within the past year. I'd prefer recommendations be for vids that have an actual plot, and aren't just straight (heh) softcore porn. I already know plenty of vids like that. Not that I think people would necessarily *object* to a vidshow made up entirely of softcore porn, but I'd like to have a little variety to work with for when I'm leading the panel discussion. ;)

Why yes, I am coming to VVC.
lierdumoa: (Default)
This week was interesting.

I gave myself food poisoning. I'm not sure of the exact culprit. I woke up in the middle of the night between Saturday and Sunday with a terrible headache, a horrible stomach ache and the shakes. I curled up into the fetal position and eventually got some sleep. The diarrhea hit around 8:30 AM, along with all the body soreness from my rigorous workout the previous day. I stayed in bed till about 3:00 in the afternoon, dosing off and then waking up whenever I needed to shift position (I wasn't moving in my sleep like I usually do because of the workout soreness) and occasionally getting up to pick at stomach friendly food or take more fun trips to the toilet.

The diarrhea cleared up early yesterday afternoon. I even managed to get out of the house and get some fresh air yesterday evening. My stomach is still feeling iffy, though, even today. At least there was no nausea/vomiting.

In other news, I've been planning vids for VVC.

This year is going to be the year of crack for me, I think. I'm going to try to make a few of my million and one movie vid ideas that I haven't gotten around to making.

Avatar (LKBV crack)
Sweeney Todd (twistedly funny crack)
Wall-E (cute crack)
Shawshank Redemption (not-sure-I-can-pull-this-off crack)
Perfume (only-three-people-saw-this-movie-so-why-bother crack)
Ravenous (more only-three-people-saw-this-movie-so-why-bother crack)
Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy (experimental/artsy crack)
Lord of the Rings trilogy (this-fandom-is-dead crack)
Twilight trilogy(I-should-probably-wait-for-the-third-movie-to-come-out crack)

Of course, I wouldn't want to give everything a way. I have a few more ideas up my sleeve, which I'm keeping secret for the time being.

I made raw vegan fudge on Thursday. 3/4 cup extra virgin coconut oil, 3/4 cup raw honey, 1 cup raw cacao powder, 2 tbsp cayenne pepper. I made it using a janky double boiler I put together with household appliances (raw honey and virgin coconut oil are both too thick/solid to mix at room temperature). Next time I'll get a thermometer so I can regulate the temperature better (you don't want to heat it past 130° F, which is the temperature inside a beehive).

I used fancy Australian active UMF16+ manuka honey. The flavor is kind of ... intense. Personally I love how the fudge turned out, but I think for some people it might be an acquired taste. If I were making it for other people, I'd use a tamer tasting honey and leave out the cayenne pepper, and maybe put in some vanilla extract.

For my next batch I'm going to try different additives, like maca powder or turmeric. I might also try stirring in some chopped nuts or dried fruit.

So I've filled up almost half my timeline in Premiere. Well, assuming I don't decide to extend the intro, which I might do. I won't know until I've started putting clips down for it. I've finished the last verse+chorus, the second chorus, parts of the 2nd verse, and half the instrumental that falls between the first chorus and the second verse, which all adds up to just under a minute. The song is just over two minutes (again, assuming I don't decide to extend the intro).

I have two possible titles I'm trying to choose between for the vid. "No Rest for the Wicked" or "What Happens to a Dream Deferred?"

This week is field trip week. We're going to a horse farm for my animal sculpture class. We're going to the foundry for my bronze casting class. I <3 art school. Even though it means I have hardly any time for anything fannish.

So I'm, like, 1/3 of the way done with another Dean Winchester vid. It's going to have a lot of playing around with color, which is fun. I haven't really played around with color this much since two VividCon's ago (or three?). After my last Dean vid being all muddy and dark, it will be nice to make a vid that's bright and ... glaring? I mean, this is Dean we're talking about, so it's not going to be warm and uplifting.

Well, okay, it's going to be warm, in a sense. I think my exact words when describing it to [livejournal.com profile] permetaform were, "I want it to be hell colored."

I've been watching [livejournal.com profile] wistful_fever's Elemental a lot. Possibly too much considering the places my brain has been going to. I kind of want to use her music to make a horrendously spectacularly earnest Twilight LKBV. The song is "Stay" by Michelle Featherstone, though for the vid's sake I'd probably have to change the title to "Stalk."

I mean, there are actual shots in the movie Edward playing piano to go with the piano in the song. I could really stretch that out. That could be half the vid right there.

I figure either Fabella would get a kick out of it or I'd get stoned and exiled from the vidding community. Possibly both.

In other news:

Art school is kicking my ass. In a good way.

I started taking kung-fu lessons. Perhaps soon I might be able to kick back.

We made wax working tools for my bronze casting class by pounding steel rod into shapes more convenient for sculpting. Sharp edges for cutting curved surfaces for shaping, etc. It amuses me that this translates to me walking around with what are essentially a couple of shanks in my purse.

I have an echocardiogram next month because apparently my resting heartrate is 101 bpm. Which is weird. Since, you know, I eat pretty healthy and walk around a lot. Heart disease kind of runs in my family, though. So, like, cross your fingers for me or something. That would be cool.

:|

Also? It turns out I'm totally allergic to walnuts. I get a rash. On my face. Thankfully with my skin tone it doesn't show up to much, but still. It makes me sad, because walnut oil makes a bitchin' salad dressing, and smells amazing, and has omega-3 fatty acids, and is basically awesome.

Yesterday my ecorche instructor told us a heartwarming tale in which he had said to his graduate figure sculpture class, "Happy Thanksgiving," and a Chinese student, in heavily accented broken English, responded, "What is Sexgiving?"

...

The BEST HOLIDAY EVER, clearly.

So, uh, I've been buried under a mountain of schoolwork. But my school locked all us poor art students out of the building for the weekend, so we're all enjoying a compulsory hiatus from our finals panic.

In fannish news, I've finally properly outlined my woman!Dean fic, and thus have determined with greater certainty that I am approximately 1/3 of the way done. It was a headache trying to work out the timeline. The story jumps around a lot.

I want to make a Sam vid to Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" (yes, the original, not the Johnny Cash cover) only I can't decide whether I have enough of an arc to make it now or whether I should wait until the series is over. Granted, considering the speed at which I typically vid, I probably won't get to finish it until the series is over anyway.

I have these very strong visuals in my head juxtaposing Sam and Dean shoving each other into walls with the Sam and Ruby sex scene, set to the thumping bassline of the chorus. Also, evil!Sam. Also, teary eyed!Sam. And flashback sequences of happy moments. Flashback sequences.

It's basically about Sam turning into a wreck over his inability to save Dean. A pathetic wreck. I already have an unofficial title for the vid. It's called "crying and masturbating."

I'm pretty sure the vid's not going to be an LKBV, but it feels like I'm making one anyway simply due to the sheer quantity of shameless self-indulgence that's going into it. But then, I'm sure I've said before that the best vidding experiences are the ones that leave you feeling like you just got away with murder.

Happy Sexgiving, everybody! Eat well!

1) I need footage of the first moon landing. Specifically the flag planting. Actually it doesn't need to be the moon. If there were footage in a sci-fi movie of a US flag being planted in alien soil by someone in a spacesuit that would work too. I'm not asking to be provided with the footage, mind you, (not that I'd turn you away if you were to do so) just name me a movie I can rent.

To recap, rentable footage of US flag being planted by person in space suit. The space suit is key. The more it looks like a contemporary space suit the better.

ETA: Footage acquired!

2) Does anyone on my flist know Chinese? I have a phrase I'd like an audio/phonetic translation for.

I am crossposting this to [livejournal.com profile] vidding.

I had this wicked cool plan (scheme?) to figure out a color scheme (plan?) for one of my sculptures in photoshop before painting it. So I took pictures. But my digital camera is old as dust and I couldn't find a card reader that reads it's obolete memory card at the nearby CompUSA.

I found an all in one card reader online and ordered it. It arrived yesterday. YAY!

Then I couldn't figure out how to install it. So I called [livejournal.com profile] fashes

[livejournal.com profile] fashes: Just stick it in your USB port.
[livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa: No, it, like, needs to install internally.
[livejournal.com profile] fashes: Did you RTFM?
[livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa: I'm unfamiliar with that acronym.
[livejournal.com profile] fashes: Read The Frickin' Manual
[livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa: That's what I thought you meant. It didn't come with one!
[livejournal.com profile] fashes: I can't help you with this over the phone. Perhaps you should get another card reader that doesn't need to install internally.
[livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa: But that will take time to order and I need these photos, like, soonish.
[livejournal.com profile] fashes: My brother has a card reader you can use. It would only require that you arrange a time to meet him, travel an hour and a half getting to him, another ten or fifteen minutes transferring the photos, and another hour and a half going back to your house!
[livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa: ...but.
[livejournal.com profile] fashes: That's what you get, procratinath0r.
[livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa: ...fine.

[livejournal.com profile] fashes: ::pat, pat:: Good job, dear.
[livejournal.com profile] fashes: Don't call me when your computer dies.

This reminds me of that time I was four and took a scissors to my dad's greencard. Cause it was so shiny, you know. I made my very own homemade confetti! I was so proud!

Uhm.

Fannishly:

I'm desperate for vid talk. People should talk about vids to me. What's your current work in progress? Your vidding philosopy? What are your thoughts on music editing? How did you do that thing with the lens flare and the talking anus? Questions are also welcome. I'm always happy to talk about me. Maybe you want to know how I did that thing with the lens flare and the talking anus.

I talked to [livejournal.com profile] amothea for like an hour today about this instrumental piece she's working on and then she had to go, like, do her job or something. And my appetite was all whet for vidding discourse.

SO!

Um.

What's up with you guys? There are some new people, I think, reading my journal. ::waves @ new people::

I'm vidding again. SPN. Crack. Episodic. I won't spoil by saying more. I'm probably not sending this one to a convention. I have a beta. Yay! I think I want two betas, but I'm not sure yet who to ask to be #2. I hope to have it up and posted within 3 weeks, ideally.

I should contact the VVC people and ask where I am on the waitlist.

I have two projects in mind for VVC. They're both ... comedies? Sort of. I think they're funny. Other people might not, so much.

Oh right.

Nonfannishly:

I got a new place. Moved in a couple weeks ago. It is a lovely studio inlaw apartment that is mine, all mine, mine, mine. I have no internet yet and no furniture aside from my bed. Because I'm ghetto like that. I should be getting internet as soon as I stop being lazy and make the proper arrangements. So, who knows when, really. I'm using the university computers for now. That seems to be working out, as it gives me extra motivation to actually go to the studio and get work done.

Oh right. So I'm an art student, for those of you who don't know, majoring in sculpture. Yes, I changed my major. Again. I was doing computer animation modeling and then took this required figure modeling course and realized I had a lot more fun modeling in the real world than on the computer. I also had, like, two sculpture instructors I didn't even have classes with come up and compliment me on my work. I took it as a sign. I decided to take another sculpture class before making any major decisions and then, uh, decided. And la! here I am.

I'll post pictures of some of my stuff later. Maybe. I make no promises as I am notoriously bad at keeping them. You should see my fanfic work in progress folder. Actually, you shouldn't. It would just make you cry.
lierdumoa: (WTF!)
OMG DONE. DONE, DONE, DONE!!!1!

The vid did not want to export, dude, I had to cut it up into, like, ten pieces and restart premiere after every other export, then tie it all back together in Virtualdubmod, then nitpick it to death a little bit more when I found stray frames/timing errors, etc. export all ten pieces again, lather, rinse, repeat ad nauseum.

I'm still frowning at that one section in the 2nd chorus that's too slow but. Yeah. Whatever. I've been working on this bitch for almost a year. I am so very, very done.

DOOOOOOOOOONE.

And on that note I give you Sam possessed by...

...the spirit of Aidan Ford!

JUST SAY NO TO THE WRAITH JUICE, SAMMICH.

Okay, so maybe that was funnier at three in the morning after ohgodIdon'tevenknowhowmany hours on my computer poking at a 16 point garbage matte.

Man, it's good to be done.

So, uh. Because I'm slightly retarded, I forgot today was the VVC registration day until [livejournal.com profile] morgandawn reminded me when I called her in the late afternoon. I'm # 20 on the waitlist, so...

We'll see.

I've been spending all day swapping out watermarked tv-ripped clips in my vid with pretty clean DVD source. This is possibly the most boring and tedious thing I have ever done on a computer. Also, it looks like that really cool special effect I did that took me five hours I'm going to have to do again from scratch. I know, I know. I bring this on myself.

On the bright side, I'm very happy with the vid. Both my beta's are pleased as well.

New toys I got to play with in this vid:
- Dean Winchester (like a cat plays with its prey)
- luma key (surprisingly versatile)
- garbage matte (nothing too sophisticated)
- audio (butchered all to hell)
- flash frames (if you don't like fast cutting, you'll probably hate this vid)

Escapade is March 7-9. Vid will be posted to my journal/imeem March 9.

In the meanby I'll probably be vanishing off lj again, busy with my art classes/band, etc.
lierdumoa: (pretentious)
Rough draft of the Dean vid is done and submitted for beta. I was surprised (though perhaps I shouldn't have been) to discover that Sam even makes bitchfaces when he's killing people if you go frame by frame. Dean never stopped being beautiful. That was nice. The vid turned out to be only three minutes long by the time I edited down the audio. Longest three minutes of my life, let me tell you. Premiere crashed about fifty times while I was making it.

No, that wasn't an exaggeration. I was too lazy to clip and imported fourteen full length episodes into Premiere wholesale via avisynth script. It crashed eight or nine times today alone. I transformed into the amazing human autosave.

God bless ctrl+s.

Or perhaps I should be saying, "don't try this at home, kids." My policy towards high end software could be summed up with the catch phrase, "break it until you break it in."

I'm going to be away from my vidding computer for the next three weeks or so, sadly. Family vacation blah. The vid won't actually be coming out until the end of January. However, I should be getting some fic writing done in the meanby. I have more bandom people on my flist than SPN people anyway, so I'm sure y'all won't mind the wait.
lierdumoa: (no thought was put into this)
Ish.

Which is to say, I've been vidding. A Supernatural vid. On and off for the past half year, but now? Now I'm making some real progress. I got all inspired to go work on it after I went to [livejournal.com profile] winchestercon two and a half weeks ago. In the past week I've edited down my audio and filled up roughly 2/3 of the timeline. I've crashed Premiere roughly twelve bajillion times. So, the usual. The editing style is new! And strange! And potentially seizure inducing. In any case, two of my vidding friends told me it looked cool, and I'm fairly certain they weren't just humoring me.

Turning a character's eyes black while maintaining reflectivity? More complicated than it looks.

Lord how I wish you could tween things in the Photoshop CS2 filter gallery. The stamp tool does really neat things to text. And photoshopping 24 frames of text, each with its own layer mask and gradient is super tedious. Okay, it would have been way easier/more efficient if I'd saved the masking for Premiere, but, that would required way more sanity than I currently have at my disposal.

Which is to say, I'll start kicking myself over it as soon as I can peel my ass out of this chair.

Jensen Ackles continues to be staggeringly beautiful. I have not had this much hotness packed into a project file since I vidded Gia. Sadly, this being a CW show and not a made for Showtime (or was it HBO?) movie, he spends far less time naked than Angelina Jolie.

He makes up for it though, with all the gasping and arching and writhing in ... agony.

...right.

lierdumoa: (vidding crazy)
I'm happy to say I actually have made progress in the realm of the fannish. I'm somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 done with my Supernatural vid. I'm sure I'd be farther along, except that I've been working on original music. I'm trying to hurry up and finish my vid so I can get back to working on original music.

I'm one of the artists in the SGA big bang project. I've already figured out what I'm going to draw. Now I just have to draw it. The piece shouldn't take more than two or three days to finish.

Yes, I know I'm supposed to be in bandom now. Shhhh. I'll get to that later.

I'm having a lot of fun with the vid, actually. It's a kind of narrative I haven't done before -- a lot less plot based/chronological than most of my vids. Character introspection. It's not a particularly ambitious project, which is good, because this means I might actually finish it. I'm experimenting with cutting in ways that may cause seizures.

I really love my source. I forget how much I love my source, until I'm vidding and it's just, wow. My God, I love my source. Supernatural makes me so happy. I ... I love the breaking. It fills my cold black soul cavity with joy. Dean's suffering is just so pretty.

Today I'm going to try to get the rest of the way through the first chorus, possibly the first half of the second verse as well, which will put me somewhere around the two thirds mark.

::crosses fingers::
lierdumoa: (vidding crazy)
I'm making something for [livejournal.com profile] vividcon after all! Possibly two things, but at the very least one thing. I started working on a vid yesterday. Supernatural incidentally. [livejournal.com profile] morgandawn, I hope you're reading this since I didn't get the chance to get you on the phone last night.

I know the recent bandom interest might be somewhat misleading when taken as a commentary on my overall taste. Allow me to state for the record that I am, in fact, a Dean girl, and my vid shall reflect as much.

I'm working with a short piece of music, and I have no life right now, so I'm fairly confident I can finish this within the week, which may or may not give me time for a second vid. I know I won't have time for my Pete/Patrick RPS vid idea, or to finish any of my truly massive unfinished Stargate: Atlantis projects, but a movie vid is a possibility.

I've crashed Adobe Premiere four times thus far and I'm pulling an all nighter. Aaaaah, feels just like home.

So the past couple weeks have kind of been the perfect storm of stress. There was roommate moving out and friend getting diagnosed with cancer and financial nitpickering and homework assignments and more homework assignments and more. At least I know now what I'll be able to handle when midterm time comes around.

I went in to switch my Art History class to an online version of the same class. Apparently it was too late to switch classes, though I could still drop the class, which I did. Honestly. They should put these things in the academic calendar so I don't just assume the deadline is the same for both. I'll probably end up taking it online over the summer.

Weir vid will not be getting done for Escapade. Basically I realized I was rushing, and I didn't spend a year on this thing so I could screw it up by rushing the ending. It will be finished when it's finished. I'm going to be working on it maybe ten hours a week until it's done, as that's all I realistically have time for.

There are some amazingly cool shots of wraith in season 1. Of course, they're interspliced with amazingly cheezy and retarded looking shots of wraith, but that's the magic of editing I suppose. I can pick out the cool ones.

Other vid ideas I'm sitting on:

con associated:
SPN Dean centric VVC Project
Super Sekrit VVC Project w/ [livejournal.com profile] fashes
something for Club Vivid; I have a few ideas I'm choosing from
Smallville vid w/ [livejournal.com profile] fashes (next BASCon)
Heroes ensemble meta vid (next Escapade)

not con associated:
SGA Rodney centric episodic vid (2x10-2x11)
Dexter vid (comedy)
Casino Royale vid (shipper)
SPN vid (meta, comedy)
Bones episodic vid (2x09)

Note, this is far from the complete list of vid ideas, merely the top ten, priority wise.

lierdumoa: (vidding crazy)
I spent yesterday deep in vid-farr. [livejournal.com profile] fashes called and reminded me to eat, which was good of her, since I hadn't eaten for fourteen hours.

Vid goeth well! I gave Weir her balls back. Verse 3 is fixed! Except for two tiny empty spots I need to replace with clips of sick/dying people. There's not a single wasted clip in the entire verse now (as opposed to before, where virtually the entire verse was a bunch o' wasted clips).

I think I might have just one explosion in this vid after all. Verse four. I'm still debating.

Premiere crashed on me once. Kind of unexpected. It hasn't crashed on me in forever. Considering how much Premiere used to crash on me, it must *really* like the new editing codec I'm using. Go me! Anyway, there was angsting and me completely forgetting what I did and spending three times as long re-doing it. I think the autosave function died before premiere itself died. I have it set to save every five minutes and I know I lost at least fifteen. I'm happy with it, though. Premiere was fritzing a little last night as well, so I restarted. Strange, strange program. I close it, and it's all, "FATAL ERROR, MUST SHUT DOWN." I'm like, "Dude, chill. I just closed you. There was no error. Tard." Then it's all "WILL TRY TO RECOVER CURRENT PROJECT" despite the fact that I'd already saved the project, literally seconds before and there was nothing to recover.

::pets Premiere::

I know, honey. You're very, very tired. It's been a hard days night and you've been working like a little bitch.

Tonight I'll pretty much be doing homework straight on through the night, go to class to turn it in, then come back home and either pass out then vid some more or vid some more and then pass out. It all depends on if I can catch my third wind.

I may have to break down and drink something caffeinated.
