Title: Greener
Fandom: Supernatural
Character: Castiel; gen
Rating: G
Summary: The grass, among other things. Coda to 4.10 "Heaven and Hell."
A/N: Spat this out the other night. Figured I might as well post it.

Lucifer's sin was pride.

Angels cannot feel, not the way humans do. They cannot feel lust or understand the self-destructiveness that motivates a glutton. Most sins, the simpler sins, begin with a sensation, a feeling, a drive, but pride, that begins with an idea. Pride is the idea that there is something good in an individual, something beautiful, that cannot be attributed to the creator, that indeed exists in spite of the creator. Pride is denying the truth—that all grace is God's grace. Pride is a lie, the very first lie, Lucifer's lie.

Castiel has always considered himself safe from such folly. Pride is not his sin. And so he fancies himself sinless enough, in spite of his misgivings, his doubt. He has faith. He is not alone in that faith. He has Uriel.

He cannot feel loneliness anyway.

And Uriel is a rock. He would never turn his back on God, not even for Castiel. Not in the way that Sam would turn his back on God for Dean, or Dean for Sam. Castiel watches as Dean presses his lips to the lips of a fallen one, loving her, even as he betrays her. It is enough to make Castiel

...

think.

God shared his grace with the angels and shared his love with humanity. The grass is always greener, or so the humans say.

And envy, like pride, begins with an idea.
