The thing is,

4x05 was a brilliant retcon that forced me to re-analyze all of Quentin’s behavior between 3x05 and 4x05. It added so much depth to the story.

The Hollywood Reporter interview, and the knowledge that Gamble was planning to kill Q off since season 3, is also retcon, in a way. It has forced to re-analyze all the creative team’s motivations for every writing choice over the past two seasons.

But this retcon has the opposite effect. This retcon – the knowledge that Gample was planning to kill Q all along, makes the entire season preceding the finale seem shallow and meaningless in hindsight.

Poignant character building scenes that I assumed were meant to develop into important long term emotional arcs, turned out to serve no purpose except to magnify the shock value of killing off characters unexpectedly.

Conversely, shitty romantic side-plots that I assumed would be quickly resolved/abandoned got upgraded to major storylines. Boring side characters (ugh Josh) that I assumed would eventually be off-screened or killed are now headlining the show (ugh Josh a second time).

.

I saw a post just now saying “even if the showrunners that turned out to be shitty, the reasons you fell in love with the show are still valid, and you don’t have to let go of that love.”

And I WISH I could keep loving the show after this.

But it’s one thing to have a show take a sudden downturn because they brought in new writers who fucked it up.

It’s a whole other thing to know that the writers were fully intending to fuck shit up all along. That they deliberately deceived you just to heighten the shock value of pulling the rug out from under you. It’s impossible for me to look at older episodes now without feeling insulted and manipulated.
