on my TFATF vid...again
Oct. 19th, 2004 01:33 amOh My God.
This is the gayest movie ever.
Now, okay, I said that before, but that was just me being all about 'teh gay.' This time, I'm looking at it as a video editor.
First of all, I will address the sheer length of time Dom spends looking at Brian and vice versa. When I initially began clipping I decided that I would clip every shot of these two characters looking at each other. I am currently about a quarter of the way into the movie and I've already identified 16 scenes of this nature. Even subtracting the time in these scenes that the actors spend glancing away at other people in the scene, that still amounts to 3 solid mintues of them staring directly at each other. Okay, so let's subtract the scenes where they're actually talking to each other. Of course you look at someone when you're talking to them. We still have one minute. For just staring at each other without talking, a minute is a long assed time.
But wait. It gets better. Or worse -- I'm not sure.
About half an hour into the movie, there was scene in which Brian came up to talk to Dom while the rest of Dom's crew was standing around him. We had shots mostly of Brian and Dom talking back and forth, interspersed with shots of the other people reacting to the conversation. Pretty much everyone's attention was on Brian at this point.
Now as I was slowly moving through the shots, wondering where to cut for my next clip, I noticed a few things that were off about Mia's camera shot. Mia, by the way, is Brian's female love interest in the movie.
1. I was longer than it should have been. It was, in fact, as long as the shots of Brian and Dom, whearas the shots of the other minor characters were ever so slightly shorter.
2. This is not the first time in the movie that the camera has switched to Mia in the middle of a conversation between Brian and Dom for no apparent reason
3. Mia wasn't doing anything in this shot. She wasn't talking. She was just looking pretty.
4. Speaking of looking pretty: the camera was pointed directly at her -- just as it was pointed directly at Brian and Dom. The other minor characters were filmed in profile.
5.Mia's shot was followed directly by a shot of Brian. I would discount this as coincidence if not for my four previous points.
Yes, it sounds like I'm being obsessive. Keep in mind that I'm clipping. Clipping is a detail oriented task. It's easier to notice these things when your going through a scene frame by frame, as opposed to simply watching it. That, plus once I came up with my theory I had to go back and gather evidence.
So we have two direct face shots of equal length set one after the other. This is a device I've used myself in vidding. It leaves the viewer with the impression that the two characters are looking directly at each other.
Except in this case, we as viewers know for a fact that Brian is not looking at Mia in this shot. Brian is looking at and speaking directly to Dom. His eyes are angled directly at the camera. Dom is standing right in front of him. In order for him to have been looking at Mia, his eyes (his whole head, even) would have to have been pointed at a slant.
This is underhanded shit, yo. This is shit that vidders do in their slash vids. They take two face shots, out of context, and place them together so that it seems as though the two characters are looking at each other. It can make a scene look way gayer than it actually is. Or in this case, straighter than it actually is.
Tell me I'm crazy. No, screw that. I know I'm crazy.
Tell me I'm wrong.
And I've still got over half of this movie to go through...

Date: 2004-10-19 02:39 am (UTC)It's the gayest straight movie that the slashers had never really caught on. Yet.
I'm sure clipping the rest of the movie wouldn't be hard work ;)

I thought Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was the gayest movie ever myself. I mean, they didn't even try to hide it!

Date: 2004-10-19 12:01 pm (UTC)Well, good luck with that. I haven't seen Sky Captain and have no desire for another fandom at this point.

Date: 2004-10-19 12:24 pm (UTC)heh, huh, m'hmm = noncommittal grunts with slightly different connotations
mmmmmmm = niiiiiice (slightly more subdued)
heh heh = short chuckle of amusement
hee = short squee
ahahahaha = I'm actually cracking up at my computer
I don't have ones for sarcasm. I would probably have misinterpreted those unless they were made clear by context. Have you ever used those with me? I don't remember them showing up in conversation.
I did eventually figure out that you meant amusement by 'heh' - it just took me a while because that's not what I use it for.
I wouldn't worry about it, really. Really, I wouldn't. I mean, so much is ambiguous on IM and people, given the opportunity, will either take things in a way that flatters them or a way that offends them. That's up to them, not you. If you get too worried about offending people you end up feeling trapped whenever you talk to them. It's not a good feeling.
So, like, if you feel the need to explain your IM things, that's cool, but don't go changing them or anything. They're cute and they're you.
