God, I hate dial-up.

So, I'm back with the parentals for Thanksgiving. The first thing I did when I got back to my old bedroom was root through the box of crap my mother never mailed me when I left last summer. I can't actually take it all back, but I am returning with 50 blank CD's, eps. 1-50 of the anime One Piece (high quality bootleg w/ subtitles), all my Dilbert and Jake 2.0 episodes (medium to low quality bootleg), Firefly (DVD's), Fight Club (DVD) and Gattaca (DVD).

Vid recc!

Check out [livejournal.com profile] absolut3destiny's vid of OldBoy here. The movie won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. The vid does great things with movmement and speed alteration. It has this whole frenzied feel to it, as if the vid itself were high on the good crack. Warning: the vid is somewhat on the graphic side, and the cuts might seem on the fast side for anyone not used to fast cuts. Don't let that stop you, cause it's good and it deserves feedback and as of yet no one has given it any. ::annoyed glare::

Some last thoughts on my TF&TF vid -- I've come to the realization that a fandom cannot be pimped on gay alone. Okay, it can, but when it comes to vids, gay alone usually doesn't cut it. My Oz vid has been considered a good recruiter vid. The vids I remember seeing that actually made me want to go out and view the source and read the fic even though I knew practically nothing about the fandom were [livejournal.com profile] killabeez's Because I Told You So, [livejournal.com profile] rhiannonhero's Hey Jupiter and more recently [livejournal.com profile] issuegirls's Save Yourself. Most of the vidders on my flist probably never heard of those last two. They were beginner vids that crossed my flist at some point. They were recruiter vids in my opinion because, although the vidders were inexperienced, the vids had the three main qualities necessary to hook people into a new fandom. 1) Gay 2) Beautiful People 3) Aaaaaaaaaangst.

The power of angst is not to be underestimated. Gay is nice to see. Beautiful people are also nice to see. Angst? Is like a car wreck (literally, in the case of TF&TF). Pain is pretty. Angst catches your eye and you can't look away. I'm not claiming that my TF&TF is a good recruiter vid, cause really, there's no way for me to gauge that. You can watch it for yourself and tell me (please, because I am a feedback whore and even if you hated my vid I'd like to hear why, preferably in detail). I tried to make it a good recruiter vid cause, well, that was my whole reason for making it. I tried to put into the vid the main things I loved about the fandom, namely car porn and the fact that theirloveissostarcrossed!!!1!

I'm debating whether or not to do that Christmas wishlist meme. If I do decide to do it, you'll see it in my next post.

I haven't sent you fb yet on your F&TF vid because I've only had time to really watch it once, but I think it is a recruiter vid! Well, at least it was for me. I love, love that song, which helps a lot. I really love how you built the story, though. I think it's a great vid, fresh and beautiful to look at. I've seen the movie and, honestly, I didn't even finish watching it, but you made me want to give it another try. (I keep thinking I should do that.) I even own it on DVD, so maybe I'll do that later this weekend at some point.

I think it's often the song choice that pushes something into recruiter territory, for me, particularly if the source is something I have already seen but didn't connect with. If you choose a song that shows me something new and compelling about the characters that I didn't pick up on, I can often be persuaded to look deeper. I had this response to both Buffy and Angel because of [livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r's vids (particularly Valentine Heart), and to Firefly because of her vids and [livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett's. I think it's half song choice, and half sheer vidder enthusiasm. When a vidder makes a vid that shows me what they love, I get it. I realized this when [livejournal.com profile] sisabet and [livejournal.com profile] drdawn started making QAF vids. I couldn't stand that show until their fannish joy wore off on me.

Given how much I have to do this week and how far behind I am on sending decent fb for things, it will likely be a good while before I have something more than wow, cool! to say, so for now I'll just say thanks for sharing your talents -- this vid is definitely a keeper.

Interesting to hear your thoughts! I don't think it's necessairily the song for me. That last vid I mentioned, Save Yourself, I remember I didn't like the song all that much, but I liked the vid, and the more I watched the vid the more the song grew on me.

You mention vidder enthusiasm. Here's an odd thing -- people have told me they were recruited into the Oz fandom by my vid. I was never actually in the Oz fandom. I fell in love with a song and Beecher/Keller was simply the most appropriate subject for that song. As I'd never actually watched the show, I ended up skimming through episode transcripts I found online for episodes with B/K scenes and then downloading those episodes. The clips I used didn't have all that much emotional significance for me -- I chose them primarily on my personal sense of aesthetics.

As for the vids you mentioned, I know I was already into Firefly and Wes/Lilah and QaF before I saw those vids. I particularly enjoyed Valentine Heart and [livejournal.com profile] sisabet's Justin vid because they reinforced all the things I loved about that relationship and that character.

I've never had a vid make me like a show/movie I didn't like before. But then, the only show I can honestly say I dislike is the WB's 7th Heaven, and as yet, I've never seen it vidded. Usually I either like a show/movie, or simply don't know enough about it to form an opinion either way.

I'm so glad you enjoyed my vid! If you do ever get around to watching it again, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
