Dec. 24th, 2004 09:39 pmSo I’ll procrastinate. With a meme! Cause lately it seems meme’s are all I’m good for.
Another vid one, this time ganked from

Beautiful
Things learned during: well, I learned how to use WMM, which is very user friendly. I learned that vidding is both easier and harder than I thought it would be. I learned how to compose a coherent visual narrative. I learned that Ted is better looking when he’s pale and tweaked out on meth (honest to God).
Things learned after the fact: I learned a bunch of simple WMM effects like crossfades that I didn’t actually apply in this vid. I remember looking over my finished vid thinking oooh, that would have looked better if it hit the beat. Next time I’m making sure everything hits a beat! And then I made Pretty When You Cry.
Pretty When You Cry
Things learned during: Cutting to the beat makes everything shinier! I learned that pain is pretty (as if I didn’t already know). I learned that if you find the perfect song, you also have to find the perfect fandom. If anyone ever tells you, “I can think of a million fandoms this song would work for,” don’t listen. The person is wrong. There’s always going to be one fandom that works better than any of the others.
Things learned after the fact: It’s much easier to vid angst when you have no emotional attachment to the source. I learned that the Oz fandom has virtually no vidding community to speak of. I also learned that I was actually much, much crazier than most other vidders, seeing as most of them would never think to hunt down episode transcripts and download nearly 30 episodes of a show they knew next to nothing about solely for the purpose of making a vid that they were pretty sure no one would watch. Although, it turns out I was mistaken on that last bit, seeing as PWYC is my second most popular vid after Superman, despite having a much smaller fandom.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Things I learned during: How to vid humor. Also, Justin ass shaking is like an explosion, by which I mean that it improves every vid it’s in.
Things I learned after the fact: Uhm…can’t think of anything.
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Things I learned during: I learned how to make a song work, when the point of the vid wasn’t immediately obvious from listening to it. I learned how speed can change mood. I learned how versatile fade to blacks can be.
Things learned after the fact: People aren’t going to get everything I put into a vid. Depending on how complex I make it, most people may not get half of what I put in the vid. But those few people who do get it make it all worth it.
I See You Baby (shakin’ that ass)
Things I learned during: how to vid with a deadline. I made it for my Sydhead’s birthday. I learned how to vid without an outline or a narrative. I also learned that there is an unlimited supply of Justinass. I thought surely I would run out and have nothing to do for the end of the song. But lo, I was mistaken, for the Justinass, it falleth like manna from the sky, and none shall fear of hunger.
Things I learned after the fact: Make a shallow vid, get a lot of shallow feedback. Also, hip swiveling has a tendency to look beatwhored even when it’s not so long as you keep your clips short enough. Very convenient when you’re working on WMM. I also learned that most non-vidders never notice stray frames.
Superman
Things I learned during: how to use Premiere. And hey look, it has a waveform! You don’t have to do your timing by ear. Actually, you never had to do your timing by ear, but you somehow spent months on WMM and never noticed it had a waveform, you retard. Oh yeah, and there’s this thing called clipping. You know how you kept importing episodes wholesale into WMM for all your other vids? Way to crash your computer, retard. Oh, let me see. I learned how to do all the basic effects I knew how to do in WMM (only now I could time them the way I wanted, yay!). I also learned how to keyframe motion, opacity, brightness/contrast, color, etc. (thanks
permetaform!).
Things I learned after the fact: People don’t take sex seriously. I realized this after the fifth non-QaF fan watched my vid and didn’t follow the narrative arc (which I expected) and then assumed there *was* no narrative arc (annoying, much?). I also learned the difficult lesson that all feedback is good feedback as long as you get a reaction. I think the most important lesson I learned was that there’s no such thing as too obssessed.
Spring Haze
This is the vid I never finished. I had fifty seconds done. I got stuck. I decided to fiddle with effects since I didn’t know what else to do. Though I never finished it, I did learn a lot from it. I learned ghosting and playing with brightness contrast in conjunction with fade to whites. I learned about running clips backwards and how some motions are more palindromic than others. I learned that with certain songs, I *need* an outline before I start vidding.
The Chemicals Between Us
Things I learned during: I learned how to construct a non-linear narrative (with a little help from my friends). I learned how to vid a movie, as opposed to a tv show. Mooooovement. I learned how to play with movement, and even cheat a little, like with running clips backwards, flipping horizontal, etc. (building on what I learned in Spring Haze). I learned how to take advantage of the effects in my source. TF&TF has a lot of movement and color and flash.I finally got to try out superimposition of faces, which I’d seen a lot in other vids but never gotten the chance to put into my vids before. I learned how put repetition to good use. Hyperbolic fades vs. linear fades. Very short fades to make a jump cut look less jumpy. Fades, fades, get your fades here, all kinds of fades. Explosions make everything better. Beware of anvils. There are always surprise learning curves behind the expected learning curves.
Things I learned after the fact: Everything is always less obvious than you think it is. Ask for beta’s when you hate your vid so much you can’t stand to look at it. That way all criticism seems rather tame compared to your own opinion. Woman cannot recruit on gay alone. Behold the power of angst.
The Steward
Things I learned during: how to vid from VOB's using avisynth. The quirks of vidding stop-motion animation, as opposed to live action.
Things I learned after the fact: I think of vidding in terms of choreography. I want the vid to dance. This vid in particular, I wanted to be graceful, growing tenser towards climax, than graceful again. I'm very conscious of beat and mood and the kind of movement I want. I can connect sounds with movement and visual brightnes and darkness, but rarely think much about color. I realized this after a conversation with
linzeems, who thinks of vids as moving collages, and hears colors in music.
