lierdumoaI was thinking recently about why I like Saiyuki. I sort of fell into the fandom because it's the only one where I have access to source material. I'm into this manga because it's convenient. I do like it, however. Love the artwork, love the slash, love the literary and religious references. Love the mindfucks and the politics and the stark simplicity of it. Like pornographic congressional haiku. Or something.
I love the characters. All of them.
I love Goku for his single-mindedness. For those rare moments when I'm writing fic or vidding and I'm completely and utterly focused. It doesn't happen much, but when it does it's the best feeling in the world and I think Goku must feel like that all the time. He's young and foolish and optimistic despite all the damage done to him. And he's annoying. Honest to God annoying. And he doesn't care.
I love Sanzo because Sanzo's a bitch. Not a wannabe bitch, but a real honest to goodness bitch. He's rude and irreverent and he looks good in leather. He shoots first and then keeps shooting. And underneath the bitchiness is an even bigger bitch. And underneath that is a sadistic little boy with issues who's really hopelessly fond of his cute, optimistic, annoying little ward and just needs a hug from someone who won't expect him to ask for one before giving it.
I love Gojyo, because he's a whore with a heart of gold. I love him because he leers and thinks about sex all the time and I like to overidentify with characters. I love him because he'd die for those he loves, but has the pride to make light of his feelings. I love him because he doesn't ask questions, doesn't ask for directions if he thinks he can figure them out on his own. I love him because he's such a guy, even with his hands around his ankles screaming for Jesus.
I love Hakkai because he's subtle. He's smart and wicked and desperately afraid of hurting the people he loves or even the regular people he meets every day because it's just too easy. I probably identify with Hakkai more than anyone else. I know what it's like to avoid confrontation because the only way I know how to fight is dirty. And you don't fuck with my friends. I love Hakkai because I get him.
I love Saiyuki because it's insanity and eyecandy and sex and snark and most importantly explosions. If only it had pirates it would be perfect.

ETA: Figured out the problem with CrackFic and writing humor from distressed!Hakkai's POV. See, this wasn't a problem when I was doing QaF RPS and writing humor from distressed!Gale's POV because distressed!Gale is hilarious. Distressed!Hakkai, on the other hand, bathes in the blood of a thousand youkai. Not so much with the funny. My goodness, this fic has issues.
