lierdumoa: (vidding crazy)

The Idea:

Simon vid I heard the song and instantly connected it with Firefly, then read the lyics and connected it with Simon. I wanted the vid to be about Simon's relationships, the first verse focusing on Simon's relationship with Kaylee, the second on his relationship with the crew, and the third on his relationship with his sister. This is probably the least thought I've ever put into a vid outline. It was a short song, and I originally intended to do the entire vid over the course of a weekend.

Seeing as it took me five weeks to finish...suffice it to say, it didn't quite work out like that.

The Technique:

I vid like I'm doing choreography, so many of my clip choices and much of my cutting style is determined by the sound of the music. I decided I wanted to play around with blackspace, as I'd seen other vidders do it for "stops" in the music. After finishing the rough draft, my beta's advised me to go back over the vid and try to make the effects thematic as well as musical.

I originally planned for this vid to be completely effects free, but after vidding the first half minute or so I realized that while the song sounded like Firefly it didn't really sound all that much like Simon. The song was folksy and jaundiced with age. Simon was bright clean modern hospital blues and whites. I ended up tinting the whole thing brown and putting certain instrumental sections under an old film filter to compensate. What I did was make the vid as usual, export it as a movie, than import said movie back in and plop filters on top as needed. At the last minute I decided to add in old record scratch noises for the credits. I tried to find an audio filter for that, and when I couldn't, I ended up clipping the sound out of the the first 0.25 seconds of Garbage's "When I Grow Up" and looping it for as long as I needed it to run.

For more detailed ramble on how I did the effects, see my posts on the aged film filter and the bridge sequence.

Screencaps: Project 1.40 MB JPEG; Effects 0.44 MB JPEG

The Software:

Video editing was done on Adobe Premiere Pro 7.0. Audio editing was done on Audacity. Aged film filter was taken from Windows Movie Maker. DVD source vidded direct via avisynth scripts. Post processing for web versions done in VirtualDub and Windows Movie Maker, respectively. All codecs used, along with avisynth are available for download in the AMVapp.

And from this post it becomes patently obvious that this vid was ALL ABOUT THE PRETTY and not so much about any deeper meaning. I'll do better next time. I hope.
