Vid ramble
Mar. 27th, 2005 01:40 pmSo over the past week I've been downloading One Piece episodes. It's an anime about pirates. It has a bajillion episodes, and I want to have all of them in my possession by the time I get around to making it, which will be first thing after this year's VividCon. And I do mean a bajillion. 138, to be exact. covered in subtitles, so I'll be needing to do a lot of photoshopping.
So over the past week I downloaded and watched episodes 61-80. I fell head over heels back into the One Piece love. I adore this anime. It's got pirates and explosions and a really random sense of humor. All of the characters are complete psychos when it comes to their goals, in much the same way that I am psycho about vidding.
I have some ideas for effects in this vid. Don't know how to describe them, really.I'll be using some of the stuff I learned in my course on Flash. It's also going to be a bit more literal than I'm used to vidding.
I think if I were to choose one word to describe the main character, it would be earnest. He's a boy who wants to be the pirate king. Whenever he tells people this, they tend to laugh in his face. He's incredibly impulsive and single minded and can come off as something of an idiot, but whatever he fails to grasp intelectually he senses instinctually probably better than anyone around him. He's incredibly loyal, and ambitious to a ridiculous degree. He tends to inspire ambition in everyone else.
I could go off on a tangent now about how western media has turned ambition into a dirty word, but perhaps it's better to save that for a different post.
He knows what he wants and he goes after it. He knows he can't do it alone, so he builds a family to help him. And they really are a family. He loves everyone on his pirate crew like family. That is the theme of my vid. That sense of family between the characters. They call each other nakama, which means something like friend, only stronger.
I'm kind of obsessed with this vid idea right now. I'm really into the fandom right now. But more than that, I'm excited about the idea because it's not like any of the other vid ideas I've had. This vid is about the love the characters have for each other. This vid is not about double meanings. It's not angsty or cynical. I'ts earnest. I've never vidded earnest before. Certainly never even had an idea for happy and earnest together. Usually my favorite thing to vid is mindfuck, and the fact that this vid is the polar opposite of a mindfuck is, well, fucking with my mind a little.
A lot of the source is off limits because, like many anime, the characters overemote and are hard to take seriously. Having the characters look ridiculous doesn't really fit with the feel of the song, or the point I'm trying to get across. I think with a lot of anime it's too easy to poke fun at the characters (not that there's necessarily anything wrong with poking fun at characters), and this vid can't do that, even lightheartedly, because the song is so guileless that anything that came across as satyrical would spoil it.
