I got some feedback today for Bitter Water from ff.net. Whoever left the comment said -- "I would ... entreat you not to make this slash. At least not extreme slash, please, because that would slightly sour the story. I BEG you at least not to make it touchy-feely, rather, verbal and emotional at most."

*snort*

Like that's going to happen. I mean, I wrote slash into the story summary. I even put asterisks around the word. Honestly, when I read this bit of feedback I just wanted to start giggling hysterically. Don't make it slash? The only reason I got into the Harry Potter fandom was for the slash. In fact, the only reason I started writing this story was for the slash. The whole dementor!Severus idea was secondary to my main intention, which was to write a long, epic Sirius/Severus love story.

And "not too touchy-feely"? Well I'm not going to write fluff, if that's what the person was worried about. But if he/she meant touchy-feely as in sex then I'll just have to dissappoint. I live for the porn. I came up with the idea for Bitter Water while trying to develop a really unique idea for a lemon. True, there will be no actual sex in the ff.net version of my fic, but there will be everything leading up to sex (the uncensored version will be posted here and at my website).

I mean - what the hell?!? Did this person think that I would discard my plot in favor of hooking up Sev? I should hope my readers have more faith in me than that. Generally I use sex/slash to add to the plot, not detract from it.

I'm sure anyone reading this is wondering why I left this rant in my lj. Well -- I would have simply told my rant to my reviewer (albeit I'd have been more polite than I'm being here), but whoever it was didn't leave an e-mail address.

Oh yeah, and I took another quiz from quizilla. The colors don't really go with my lj, so I'm posting the results as a hidden link.

It fits me so well! Especially seeing as I am the first person I've heard of ever to write a dementor!Severus fic.

Anyway -- Ta Ta!

lol... the result does fit you well. ^_~

Someone left a similar comment about my Angel/Lindsey fic as well on ff.net. The reviewer said - and I'm quoting from ff.net - "I still wish you'd make both Angel & Lindsey "straight" again. I can live with Angel/Cordelia or Lindsey/Cordelia."

Then he/she mentioned that he/she was the only one reviewing the fic - this is what I assumed - as a subtle hint to let me know that Angel/Lindsey (or slash) isn't popular.

Gah!!!

Good thing is now I have more than one person reviewing. *happy sigh*

Oh, on a completely random note, I saw the S6 finale of Buffy today. Gotta say, I'm loving the Evil Witch!Willow, she comes closely second (if not tied) to the vampire!Willow. ^_^

That's the thing about reviewers -- some of them seem to me to think that the only reason we authors write is for the reviews. They just don't get it -- we write because we love to write.

Don't get me wrong -- feedback is very important to me. Useful critiques can improve my style. But telling me that you don't want to read slash is *not* a useful critique. Whether or not a story is slash has no bearing on the story's quality.

The thing is, nobody is this presumptious when it comes to actual publications. It's kind of annoying that a reviewer would tell me to change *my* plot to suit *their* preferences.

And I think it's really strange that someone would want to tell an author their subject matter was unpopular. Is fanfiction writing a popularity contest? I'd rather get one long review telling me I'm original and creative than five short reviews telling me: "That was just soooo cute!!!"

I agree, I started writing because I wanted to. I did it for ME (and maybe my sick, twisted mind, but let's not get into that... *grin*) and not the reviews.

She didn't say that slash is unpopular, but she did say that "And I'm the only person reviewing" after suggesting I change it to Angel/Cordy or Lindsey/Cordy. Blah!

I'm actually happy with either kind of review: they can be short and simple (like "that's SOO cute!" ...etc.) or long and insightful (like "I like how you explored Harry's darker side...etc.).

What can I say? I need an ego-boost from time to time. ;)
