Naruto: The Introduction

lierdumoaIt's come to my attention that I am the only Naruto slash fan I know. I'm finding it rather tiresome squeeing to people who don't know what the hell I'm talking about. In an attempt to alleviate this problem, I've decided to author a series of pimp posts for the fandom, starting with this short intro.
THE PREMISE:
Once upon a time, in a land far away, a giant nine tailed flaming fox demon ravaged a town. All the best ninjas saved the town by sealing the demon inside the body of a baby boy by the name of Uzumaki Naruto. As town scapegoat, the boy grew up lonely and full of angst. The boy wasn't one to brood, so he channeled his angst into childish pranks.
But this boy was more than a prankster. This boy had a dream. He dreamed of becoming the town's next great ninja. If he were to accomplish this, you see, the townspeople would respect him and treat him like a person, instead of like a big flaming fox. Demon.
Of course, there would be evildoers out to get Naruto and try to harness the immense power of the fox demon. You know how it goes.
THE CONFLICT:
Once upon a time (the same one) in a land far away (different part of town), another little boy with exceptionally pretty eyes (we'll come back to that later) by the name of Sasuke was living a fairly well adjusted life. Well, he had something of an inferiority complex because his older brother was the town's ninja prodigy, but overall, fairly well adjusted.
Then his brother became evil and killed the whole town, including his parents. He didn't kill Sasuke, because as he put it, Sasuke wasn't worth killing (oh, that's a buuuuurn) since he begged for his life (you'll notice how flames are becoming a theme here). See, only a pathetic baby would beg for his life, and Sasuke was already, like, 8 at the time. Fuckin' pansy.
Sasuke, unlike Naruto, was one to brood, so he brooded and brooded some more and dreamed of one day avenging his town by virtually any means necessary.
Meanwhile, he moved to the next town over and met Naruto.
THE CRYING SHAME:
Once upon a time (today) in a land far away (the internets) there lived an anime. And that anime was the gayest gay that ever did gay. However, unlike all the other gay anime, this one was pretty straight looking to the untrained (read: blind) eye. Why it was barely camp at all if you didn't count the flaming spirit energy. Or the constant eyefucking. Or the female protagonist with THIRD WHEEL printed across her forehead. Or the crossdressing antihero dying a tragic death in his lover's arms. Or...
Okay, so it was the campest camp that ever did camp. However, the two male protagonists were pretty butch and did a lot of macho posturing. They hardly ever touched or got in each other's personal space except when they were fighting (all the time). They might have kissed once, but it was a total accident. Besides, Naruto was in love with the Sakura (better known as THIRD WHEEL) and Sasuke was in love with power and revenge. It never would have worked out.
The anime ended up with a giant straight male fanbase and nary a yaoi fangirl to its name. Hardly anyone wrote fanfic about Naruto and Sasuke having teh hawt sexx0rs. Don't even get me started about the vids.
It's a very tragic tale, but you -- that's right, YOU -- can change the ending of this story.

It's a lovely series, and I really have to yank the scanlations from the brother's computer instead of just watching the
gayanime.Regarding Sasuke... wasn't the Uchiha clan part of Konoha? I was under the impression that he was from the same village as Naruto and the rest, but that his clan lived in some sort of... compound? Perhaps the clan was a bit cloistered together, but still part of Konoha. Itachi killed his entire clan (but Sasuke), not his town. Because the Uchiha's were wearing the Konoha foreheadprotectors, with the stylized leaf - the clan symbol is on their clothes, like it is with so many other ninjas in the town. [/ramble]
You'll be pleased to know there actually is Naruto-fic. A lot of it is really horrid, unfortunately. Like Whiny/weepy/emo!Naruto, who slits his wrists because his Twu Luv doesn't lurve him back! Or like Bouncy!Sasuke - where the boy has been force-fed some serious crack.
Good luck wading through the massive amounts of waste to get to the few gems. ^^;
D'you want some recs? These are from the top of my head, since I'm at work right now where I really should stay away from lj, but, well...

I suspected as much with Naruto, because boys always get effeminized by bad authors. Bouncy!Sasuke, though? I didn't see that one coming.
