Vidtalk etc.
Jun. 21st, 2005 06:34 pmToday in lecture we went over Foley sound design. Briefly the prof. discussed how Foley artists will watch an actor's shoulder motions in a scene where the feet are not visible to match footstep sounds.
Saturday when I started Gia!vid I was putting in a clip of Gia walking down a catwalk. She was walking with attitude, so her shoulders were swinging like whoa. I synched the movement of her shoulders up with the beat. It felt wrong when I did that, but I couldn't figure out why. OMG epiphany! The movement of shoulders is syncopated with the movement of the feet when a person is walking. Logically, any sound should "come" from the feet. I matched up the onscreen motion of the shoulders with the music, but my brain unconsciously wanted the beat to line up with the offscreen motion of the footsteps, hence my timing looked off.
BTW Sydhead, guy in my flim group leant me the first 8 episodes of Samurai Champloo that he owns on DVD as well as the show's soundtrack.
::pets pretty, pretty anime::
