Random Crap

So I woke up rather depressed. My room is really nasty, because I failed to clean it before I left for vacation. I left my sister's apartment last night without saying goodbye, and without even realizing my faux pas. Sometimes I act like a completely normal human being. Other times, I lose all social graces. This happens spontaneously -- it's like the part of my brain that tells me "Don't act like an arsehole" just shuts down every so often," only to come back and laugh at me once I've already done said arseholish thing.

So my new years resolution is to not fuck up like I did last semester. I was surprised to find I'd ended up with a D in physics. I was totally expecting a flat F. Either way, I'll have to take the class over, which I'm almost looking foreward to, as it will be an easy class next semester, and considering I already passed out of first semester physics, I won't be behind the majority of my classmates. Of course, the reason I got a D was because the first semester here is pass/no record, so there's no point in dropping a class if it's not going on your record anyway.

In entertainment news -- because it is the only kind of news right now that isn't bringing me grief -- how funny is Lord of the Rings? Every single person I've spoken to in real life can't believe how gay all the hobbitses are. It cracks me up. The way Frodo can't say Sam's name like a normal person, but has to cry out with such intense longing. The way he fainted waif-like into Sam's arms and was then cradled there for considerable time. And we all agree, of course -- Merry & Pippin are the cutest couple ever (I'm not even talking about fandom people here -- I'm talking about my real life friends from highschool that I saw over winter break). *snicker* Funny -- some people wished Evenstar had been there more in the movie because they liked the whole romance element. What? Two hobbit couples weren't enough romance for you? They actually put her more in the movie than in the books, which pissed some hardcore fans off. I guess they just didn't want any heterosexuality encroaching on their gay.

So it occurs to me that the script writers were trying to stay as close to the books as possible. Which means that all this blatant subtext must be in the books. I can't imagine they were just catering to the female fanbase, because there's such a large male fanbase to consider. I suppose when you're reading it it's easier to shrug it off than when you're actually seeing it on a huge movie screen. I find this horribly amusing, because J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the few fantasy authors that all those various puritannical Christian groups have nothing against. He was such a strong Christian himself, and he goes into the theory of how none of his story actually contradicts the bible and you could even consider some things representations if you wanted to go that far. I mean, he's not trying to rewrite the bible like that Narnia fellow, but he doesn't contradict it with fantasy either. So I'm finding it incredibly, incredibly funny that one of the few fantasy series the Christians like is the gayest ever. I've said it before, but allow me to repeat myself -- it's all about the homoerotic subtext, baby! All. About.

But you know what really cracks me up? Thinking about how the stage directions went. "Okay that didn't work for me. Frodo's not looking betrayed enough. Let's do it over, but this time look at him like he just cheated on you with your sister."

In other news -- I just read [livejournal.com profile] queenofalostart's Everwood/LOTRPS crossover (Eprham/Orlando). So good! Complete with obscure media references that I could pride myself on catching. And mad UST. I'd put up a link, but I don't know that she's posted it anywhere yet. It's nice to know authors. You get to read stuff early. *eg*
