Media reviews, I mean. Everybody talks about their shows on lj after they watch them. So, here's what I thought of Angel, Smallville, and Jake 2.0 this week:

Wednesday's Angel? Was fantabulous. I have gained new respect for Wesley. I'm worried about Spike and his current status as the comic relief. I had to laugh at the random references he kept making during the episode. They wouldn't make sense to anyone who hasn't watched Buffy religiously, as I have (it's still my favorite show of all time, no matter how much I may obsess over my latest anime craze). It bothered me a little when he talked about killing his mother after he became a vampire. The way he said it made it sound weird and scarily funny and absurdly inappropriate. Anyone who saw "Lies My Parents Told Me" (Buffy season 7; episode 17) would know that the real story is actually very disturbing and sad and not funny at all.

Okay, that last bit deserves some clarification. In Wednesday's Angel, Wesley had something of a crisis after he killed a man who he thought was his father in order to save the woman he is in love with (it turned out to be an enemy masquerading as his father in order to infiltrate the inner circle in which Wesley is a member). Angel made the flip comment, "You know, I killed my real father," which was highly inappropriate considering that Angel was evil at the time. He was a vampire. Well, he's still a vampire, but after the patricidal incident he was given a soul and stopped being evil. Spike, on the other hand, mentioned to Wesley that he killed his mother. As I said before, he said it in a manner which only made it sound absurd. If Wesley had know the real story, he wouldn't have been as annoyed with Spike as he was.

I suppose I'm just bothered because there are probably a lot of people who watch Angel but have never watched Buffy and I feel like they're missing something big by not knowing this other side of the story.

Wednesday's Smallville was mediocre. I don't really have much to say -- except only Kristen Kruek could pull off looking that cute in community service scrubs. Clark was...Clarkish. Lex is getting more evil by the week. There was no Lex/Lionel "bad touching" to speak of, thank God. I don't think I could have taken it three weeks in a row.

[livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock promised a 90 page Clark/Lex fic, and I'm still waiting for her to deliver. *pouts* My fandom doesn't love me anymore.

Jake 2.0 was really good. That show has some fantastic character development. I especially like how it handle's relationships. I was expecting Sarah to string along for a few more episodes before acknowledging that Jake wasn't right for her. I could never see their relationship happening -- Sarah just wasn't pretty enough for him as I saw it. Instead, in last week's episode, Jake decided to go to the next level and tell her the truth about the "diverted funds" she was looking into and the nano-robots integrated into his nervous system making him a kind of superman. Of course she said "All I asked was for you to be honest." *How dare you make a joke of this* was left unsaid. She then slapped him (and you could tell by the look on his face that this was the last thing he expected her to say or do). Poor Jake, but as [livejournal.com profile] taraljc's mentioned in her review of "Middlemen" (it's worth a read if you want a more in depth synopsis) this not only opens the way for Jake's relationship with Diane (who actually *is* pretty enough for him), but it allows for future drama. Eventually Sarah's going to get something out of her research and figure out that Jake was serious, as outrageous as the truth may have sounded.

But back to this week's episode. We already knew that Jake was loyal and cute in a nerdy way and a gentleman and prone to being extremely childish at odd intervals. In this episode, we saw some of Jake's darker side (something even Jake hadn't seen before). We also so his ability to think on his feet and not buckle under pressure (hey -- maybe he really is cut out for being an agent!). He got his job as an agent mostly due to the millions of nanites flooding his system and making him the perfect super soldier. He's proving that they aren't what makes him a good agent. This week he had to infiltrate band of soldiers turned mercenaries (is that the right word? probably not. whatever). They were about to figure him out and he managed to pull through without losing face in front of them with this really cool impromptu speech. I was like *Eeeeee!* the whole time.

Mmmm'kay -- that's all. Now I have to go check if [livejournal.com profile] superplin has put up her weekly Angel review yet, because I'm really interested in what she has to say about this week's episode.

Bye.
