John/Rodney in Siege, Trinity, Hive
Dec. 31st, 2005 01:34 pmI was thinking last night about my Rodney vid idea. Specifically this verse:
Now our finest hour arrives
See the pig dressed in his finest fine
And all the believers stand behind him and smile
As the day lights up with fire
I wanted to parallel Rodney in "Trinity" with Ford in "Hive." I knew how to make the parallel work visually, but I didn't know how to make it work thematically. I needed a reason why it was important for my vid to parallel the events in "Trinity" with the events in "Lost Boys."
Then I realized I was missing the third, key component. Neither "Trinity" nor "Lost Boys" are major plot points, in and of themselves. They are just aftershocks. The real earthquake happened back in season 1, with "Siege II."
In "Siege II" the wraith were a bigger threat than ever. Rodney built a bomb. Bomb No. 1. The idea of planting the bomb in the first place, if I remember correctly, was John's. Had John's suicide mission actually gone as planned, Rodney would have most likely been next.
In "Trinity" Rodney built bomb No. 2 (or metaphorical equivalent, thereof). Again, it was a weapon to fight the wraith threat. Again, John helped in the making of it. They set it off together and, again, the bomb nearly killed them both. Further musings on the Rodney's emotional arc prior to and between "Siege II" and "Trinity" can be found in my meta post here.
Which brings me to "Hive."
Ford's enzyme arc began in "Siege II." Here we see the culmination of that arc. Ford is now volatile and unpredictable. He decides to strike out against the wraith. The wraith are his purpose. He emulates John and tries to re-create John's team. John is the idea. He uses what he learned of Rodney's knowledge and expertise (the whole entrapment scenario, removing the DHD crystals as per Rodney's instruction). Rodney is his engineering.
Ford is bomb No. 3.
I love my show.
In other news, today is a very good day. Got my finances mostly in order. They are not as lacking as I thought. Sweet, sweet relief.
