Now I'm all confused. Maybe the comics are different? I'm using cartoon canon, since that's all I'm familiar with. As far as I can remember, whomever the symbiote was possessing it still referred to itself as venom. At one point in the cartoon Venom spawns Carnage and there's a scene where they're meeting for the first time and neither of them are possessing anyone (for the time being) and they're both calling each other Venom and Carnage.
According to wikipedia, Venom is the result of the symbyote latching onto a human, then goes on to say that the symbiote spent most of its time in Eddie Brock. That would seem to imply that it's still Venom regardless of whom it's possessing.
