You could be correct on the xvid not being activated until your vid looked for it.
When I researched the problem the windows help site said that windows and xvid had a compatibility problem that hadn't been resolved yet.
It looks like that codec was DL'd by my daughter when she had this computer sometime between June and Aug. of 2004. So, yep I didn't get it from the DL of your vid. SORRY.
But boy I sure did freak when I couldn't play any of my vids. phew.
