Quentin makes a speech at the end of season 3, telling the squad that he’s decided to sign himself over to an eternity in hellprison being the Monster’s guardian. When his friends try to argue with him about the decision, he says, “Alice, who’s the one that died for us?” then turns to Eliot and says, “You were willing to stay in Fillory forever. How is this different?”
And we all assumed he was talking about Eliot marrying Fen. But he wasn’t just talking about Eliot marrying Fen, was he?
Now that 4x05′s aired we know this decision was made after The Rejection™ – after Eliot told Quentin that he was only ever with Quentin because he didn’t have a choice.
And Quentin actually believed Eliot's bullshit and apologized for wanting that relationship.
“How is this different?” – what Quentin means by those words is, “You sacrificed an entire lifetime stuck in a relationship you didn’t want with me. For me. Now it’s my turn to make a sacrifice for you.”
Quentin thought signing the rest of his existence away to a creature that lives to consume and destroy was only fair because “That’s what you did for me, isn’t it? That’s what our relationship was, wasn’t it? You giving and me taking? You feeling trapped, and me getting everything I wanted?”
