Duuuuude...
Jan. 24th, 2004 03:19 pmSo a little while back,
rhiannonhero wrote some Queer as Folk RPS (real person slash). I read it. It was good. I especially enjoyed it because when you slash actors, as opposed to their characters, you don't have to bother learning any of the tv show canon in order to understand what's going on.
Then
rhiannonhero made a Queer as Folk songvid (in case anyone doesn't know what this is -- you make a music video out of something by piecing together video clips and putting them to a musical score -- in
rhiannonhero's case, a remix of "Hey, Jupiter" by Tori Amos). Now I was intrigued. Well, maybe intrigued isn't the right word. Anyway, I started downloading episodes to watch, because from what I could tell just by watching the video and knowing nothing else, there were two hot guys, they had angsty issues, they broke up for a bit -- thereby producing even more angst -- and they got back together again. Of course, I wasn't sure, having known nothing about the show except what I saw in this songvid, but I had a fairly good idea.
Of course, that's not all I learned from the songvid. I also learned that Queer as Folk was definitely a show I wanted to see.
So I started downloading episodes and searching for episode transcripts. When I failed to find transcripts, I looked for episode summaries that were longer than three sentences in length. And of course, I looked for some fanfiction as well. I found some stuff worth adding to my favorites. Some badfic, of course. One is bound to find badfic when one doesn't know where to look for goodfic. Anyway, suffice it to say, I was well on my way to becoming truly obsessed.
So I watched a number of episodes, including a few of the most recent and a few at the beginning. The show's on it's third season, apparently. And this is what I'd like to say about it:
I'm sure you've all seen shows/movies where two characters start staring at each other in a way that can only be referred to as eyefucking. Perhaps, like me, you've been truly dissappointed when these two characters happened to both be male, and you knew that regretfully the eyefucking would never translate into, well, other kinds of fucking. *cough*ClarkandLex*cough* Really -- at times it's just painful to watch.
Perhaps even worse, when the two characters are in fact gay, but even with the chance of snogging you must still prepare yourself for the inevitable fade to black. After all -- it's not like you're actually going to see anything. That is, unless you're watching Queer as Folk. In which case you'll most likely get to see everything at one point or another.
So, yeah. As far as tv show characters go, Brian Kinney is my brand new Pretty. And I get to see him naked. Lots and lots.
*throws confetti*
Icon Ideas:
Of course, I'm thinking of making a QaF icon. I'm brainstorming up a few ideas. I've seen a number of icons with the theme "this is sex" on them. Perhaps take a few screenshots from various Brian/Justin sex scenes, make about four or five frames out of them, put "this is sex" in all of the frames except for the last one, in which I add in the word "obviously." But then, I don't really like the idea of making icons out of private jokes, so I might forget that idea. Of course, I could just make a snogging icon. I've already made snogging icons for other fandoms. This fandom has a particularly large number and variety of snog shots -- perfect for icon making.
Another idea, which is about as complicated to describe as it is to make, begins on this premise: QaF has a way of turning my brain to putty. My thought process while watcing episodes runs along these lines -- "Can we get back to Brian and Justin being naked, please? Please, please, please, please, pleaseYES! Thankyou! Yes!" So basically I put this message on an icon. Start with the first sentence, perhaps having it marquee across the icon while changing backgrounds about three times. I'm thinking for backgrounds that there just be random screenshots, probably of the other characters. Perhaps not marquee. Perhaps just put in the words regularly, but have them fade out so that not too many words appear at the same time. Like, once I get to the second line, I start fading out the first word in the first line, fading words as I add them. Once I get to the last random screenshot and the first sentence is entirely faded out, I'll start with the pleases. No fadouts -- I'll just start adding them until they fill up the icon. I could get creative here -- different fonts and font sizes for each 'please,' piling each repetition of the word on top of the icon until the image is completely obliterated. Or maybe I could just go in neat lines, letter by letter, as if the words are being typed in while you watch. Line by line, covering the icon (think The Shining -- "All work and no play make Jack a dull boy" all the way down the page). Fade the pleases out and then, right when they completely dissappear, flash in a scene of Brian and Justin naked, and in large bold letters "Yes!"--fadeout "Thankyou!"--fadeout "Yes!"--and hold that scene for a bit before starting over.
Will take quite a bit of work. Will probably take about twice as long to size it down to under 40k as it will to make it in the first place. Anyway, it'll be my new major icon project.

Date: 2004-01-24 05:54 pm (UTC)Gale Harold's acting is quite good. I get completely sucked in whenever his character comes on. Season three is lovely. I think my favorite scene, oddly enough, is Brian saying "I think I'm suffering from possession withdrawl. I need to lie down." Loved the reuniting of the couple. Brilliantly done. Much to my surprise -- I also really enjoyed Hunter.
