fun, fun for *everyone*
Feb. 19th, 2004 03:49 pmThis is going to be a very long post. I keep getting ideas for things I could post about. My brain is all over the place.
First Order of Business
This morning
permetaform wrote a post on a political scandal. Apparently there is evidence that the wife of the governor of Texas wants a divorce. Because her husband was cheating on her. With a man. Who might possibly his new Secretary of State. I'll link to her post here. Granted, this information might be entirely untrue.
But dude -- the governor of Texas. And you know...you *know* that somehow this will lead to fanfiction being written. That's why we have a livejournal community like
current_affairs. Make a political statement. Slash a politician.
Which brings me to a lengthy piece I like to call:
Slash: How low can you go? Without falling down laughing, that is.
Slash, as you all know, is fanfiction featuing homosexual (male/male) relationhips. Slashers are the people who write it, or support it in other ways.
And slashers really will slash *anything.* This has been proved to me time and time again, in many different ways. I was first appraised of this when I found people in the HP fandom slashing everyone from Dumbledore to Gilderoy to Hagrid. And then there was that infamous Voldemort/Pikachu fic (Ride the Electric Serpent by
wikdsushi).
Many months back I was on
misswindy's friends list looking for interesting people. I found
aotearoagal slashing Winnie the Pooh. I friended her immediately, of course. I'm telling you -- that shit is comedy *gold.* Gopher+Rabbit4EVAH!!1!!2!!@1!!
LotR brought with it a *glut* of RPS. Everything from Dominic/Elijah, to Orlando/Viggo/Billy to orgy fics involving nearly the entire cast. Well, usually not Ian McKellen, because even though he's the only one on the cast who's actually gay, most people consider him too old to slash. Which isn't to say that some people don't make an exception and slash him like mad.
Later on,
permetaform introduced me to anthropomorphic slash. Johnny Depp/The Camera. Johnny Depp/His Underwear. Agent Sands/His Gloves (Once Upon a Time in Mexico). Okay, so cameras don't have genders. But we'll assign them genders, just so we can make this slash.
Because we have twisted senses of humor. And we know the joy of a good in joke.
Second order of business. Recently a slasher started a large kerfuffle by saying that she doesn't support gay marriage. Both
permetaform and
bonibaru posted on the subject. (read here and here)
Hypocracy or not?
Well first of all, how much of slash is actually a statement about personal beliefs. As
bonibaru stated in her post, a lot of slash is just porn. Porn, porn, porn. Slash is often a guilty pleasure. Still, I find it strange that someone would write it and honestly believe that gay marriage is against their beliefs. But then, I suppose people often have sexual leanings that do not coincide with their moral beliefs.
Because frankly, adulterers don't cheat on their spouses because they think it's right. Rather, they consider it a guilty pleasure. I *don't* look at slash this way. I can understand people looking at slash this way. I don't agree with this viewpoint, however, and neither does the majority of the slash community.
If my friends list is anything to go by, I have some *rabid* supporters of gay marriage. Heh. I'm one of them. I believe that it is wrong to deny homosexuals the right to marry the same way conservatives believe that homosexual marriage is wrong in the first place. This is one of my fundamental beliefs. If you don't agree, then you probably don't belong on my friends list. And I hate Bush. I really, really hate Bush. Because I think he's an idiot, and because I think he's a bigot.
He was once quoted to say that he didn't consider Atheists American citizens. Yeah, well fuck you too, Bush. Fuck you too. I'm as American as you are.
You know, Vice President Cheney is in support of gay marriage. His daughter's a lesbian. Just FYI.
But I digress. I have some very strong political opinions. I often don't discuss them. I don't think it's necessary to go to the journal of The Slasher Who Thinks Slash Is Wrong and flame her. She's entitled to her opinions, and I can see where she's coming from. I hope she hasn't formed too many close ties to people in fandom, because she's about to become a complete pariah. She pissed a *lot* of people off when she said what she did.
I, however, do not consider her excessively hypocritical, or even surprisingly hypocritical. I mean, as I said, much of slash is porn. Porn really doesn't say all that much for gay rights. And frankly, most writing is not written for the purpose of making a political statement. If I pair two men together in a story, it's because I love a good love story, and I think that the characters, whoever they are, make a good couple. If I'm saying something about gay rights, that's all well and good. That's not why I write, though. I write because it's something I'm good at, and I want to share my creativity with others.
Third order of business. Hello fellow QaF'ers! I love you guys. Now I don't know if you know this, but...
Our fandom is fuckin' weird.
Our fandom has two major fic archives. They largely resemble ff.net, in that there's piles of badfic that one must dig though to find the goodfic. And most of the goodfic, it seems, is written on livejournal. It is *not* posted to either of these major archives. Weirder yet, it isn't posted to livejournal communities. I don't even know of any fanfiction communities for this fandom. Why aren't there any fanfiction communities for QaF on LJ?
Which brings me to another point -- how the hell do people find out about the goodfic? It seems to me they only find out about it though their friends. I mean, I wrote a decent Gale/Randy RPS. I got a lot of feedback for it. Pretty much everyone who gave me feedback found my fic either directly or indirectly through
rhiannonhero, because she made mention of my fic on her journal. It seems to me that the only way to get anywhere in this fandom is to have connections.
Which isn't to say that connections are difficult to make. I've found all the QaF'ers on LJ to be very friendly. I just find it strange that broadening one's readership requires so much networking.
And half the RPS is friends locked. Now that's just annoying. I usually don't friend people just to read their fic unless their fic is, like, mindblowingly good.
Those are the wierd things that set our fandom apart. There are also some very cool things. The participants seem to be much more unashamedly horny. It's the difference between leaving feedback like, "Damn girl, that fic was hot," and leaving feedback like, "OMFG -- *comes*!" I suppose that's to be expected, considering QaF sort of encourages a more open sexuality. After all, the show is basically soft core porn, only with plot and characterization. On SV we have shirtless Clark. Or better yet, shirtless Lex. On QaF we have naked Brian. Or better yet, naked Brian making orgasm noises.
Mmmmm...naked Brian...
Final thoughts:
Marriage is love. Actually, marriage is more than love. Marriage is also commitment and hard work. Marriage is like an equation with multiple solutions. So you see, marriage is math. And we all know that linear algebra is totally gay. (source)
So where was I? Oh, yeah.

and spelled correctly too.

And I know what you mean about the fanfiction communities - tres strange. There is definitely highschool-grade separatism being practiced here...

Date: 2004-02-20 12:01 am (UTC)Well, technically, there is at least one.
how the hell do people find out about the goodfic?
For a lot of us? Pure luck...then we spread the love to others.
And half the RPS is friends locked. Now that's just annoying.
I agree that it's annoying, but many people don't like to read it. They are squicked about it being about real people. So, to prevent getting flamed from readers, a lot of authors friends lock it, or at least make filters for it.
The participants seem to be much more unashamedly horny.
LOLOL...I haven't been in any other fandoms, but yes, we are an unashamedly horny bunch, aren't we?
