Oh, man. Just found the perfect, perfect song. Like, *perfect.* Like, omgmustmakevid.
But I have no source.
Woe.
"The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" by The Postal Service
Fandom: The OC
Summary: Seth, Ryan, Seth/Ryan
Lyrics
smeared black ink: your palms are sweaty
and I'm barely listening to last demands
I'm staring at the asphalt wondering what's buried underneath where I am
I'll wear my badge:
a vinyl sticker with big block letters adherent to my chest
that tells your new friends I am a visitor here:
I am not permanent
and the only thing keeping me dry is
you seem so out of context in this gaudy apartment complex
a stranger with your door key explaining that I am just visiting
and I am finally seeing why I was the one worth leaving
d.c. sleeps alone tonight
you seem so out of context in this gaudy apartment complex
a stranger with your door key explaining that I am just visiting
and I am finally seeing why I was the one worth leaving
the district sleeps alone tonight after the bars turn out their lights
and send the autos swerving into the loneliest evening
and I am finally seeing why I was the one worth leaving
The Idea
This song just, gah. It just *spoke* to me, and that sounds unbelievably corny but I can't think of a better way to word it. It just feels like Seth and Ryan for one thing. I actually went to the official website to double check that the song hadn't actually been used in the show because it felt so appropriate for the show and the characters.
The song is about a cop, or a security guard or some such. I found that interesting because I'm making this vid about the exact opposite. Not an authority figure, but two rebellious teenagers.
The first thing that caught my ear -- "you seem so out of context" -- this series is essentially a fish out of water story. Seth is a social reject."I am a visitor here: I am not permanent" -- Ryan is a poor kid coming to live with a rich family. Then this line -- "this gaudy apartment complex" -- Orange County, according to this show, really is a gaudy place. Everthing about it is overstated.
"I was the one worth leaving" -- Seth abandons Ryan throughout the first season. Not cruelly, but due to his distractions and his fears. Ryan is constantly pulled back from Seth's lifestyle by the poor home he left behind. Ryan can't seem to escape his past, and Seth is so busy trying to escape everything that he ends up escaping the wrong things. They keep leaving each other. But when all is said and done, they keep returning to each other.
Then, of course, the season ends on them both leaving. Seth leaves his home, and Ryan returns to his original town. One month till the new season starts and we see if Seth and Ryan will manage to return to each other again.
Funny that this song is about a cop or a security guard, but the mood of it doesn't really inspire authority figure images at all. Sweaty palms, spacing out staring at the ground, feeling out of place, running away, taking refuge from responsibilities, feeling abandoned -- this song just sings teenage angst.
And I think I might be in love with it. I just can't stop listening to this song. God, it's stunning. It's really hit an emotional chord with me. OC is one of my favorite shows -- probably my second favorite show after QaF, and I admit my interest for QaF has waned a bit in the past month. It will probably pick back up when season 5 starts.
But damn. There's really nothing like finding the song for characters you love in a show you love.
I think I need a new icon. One that says: "No source. Cannot cope."
ETA:
permetaform, you would love this song. The beat is, like, mad syncopated.
But I have no source.
Woe.

Date: 2004-09-29 09:35 pm (UTC)It is. The song has this incredible syncopated beat that is quite frankly intimidating the hell out of me. I plan to hone my vidding skills on other projects so that by the time the DVD's come out I'll have the skills produce the vid that is currently a pretty dream in my head.
