Craaaaaaap.

Took a nap last night, only alarm did not go off. Simon vid is still not done. None of my other vids are rendered into the right format. [livejournal.com profile] permetaform, exactly when do we need to meet up and how much time are we going to have? L Word ep finally downloaded. Don't know if I'll have time tonight to watch it.

Cold, please go away. I'm tired of waking up in the morning feeling like ass. And the vague sense of nausea I went to bed with last night? So not cool.

Escapade. Tomorrow. Holy crap.

Well, anyway, class is starting.

Hey! Just a quick question...

Can you recommend a program to clip DVD's? I have one I'd like to put a segment up on... but can't find a program. I have Alcohol 120% on my computer... but it was a "gift" without supporting paperwork, and I can't figure the darn thing out! It rips to something called ".mds" - and I can't figure out how to convert to .avi or .wmv. I also tried something called AAA DVD Ripper 2.0, (to convert to .avi), but it was sooooo slooooow, it took like 1 hour to rip 20 minutes, and I finally stopped it.

Is there something faster? And I don't need .avi, .wmv is just fine!

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Most people I know use DVD2AVI, which you can just find with a google search. It's free and good, from what I hear.

Can you give me any advice on how to clip out just what I want, once it's in .avi format?

Perhaps a program?

I'm such an idjit in this arena!

DVD2AVI lets you clip out specifically what you want directly from the DVD. It will give you clips in an AVI format. I don't use the program, so I can't tell you how to use it, but a lot of vidders I know use it, so I assume it's fairly user friendly.

If you already have an AVI you can put it into WMM, put what you want on the timeline, and tell it to export. The DV-NTSC format is the highest quality export WMM allows.

What are you making clips for, specifically? Also, I'm assuming you're on Windows. Are you on Windows? Because if not, then I don't actually know what programs you'd need as they are not the same for Mac and Windows. Are you clipping to vid? Because clips used to vid are usually far less compressed than the vid itself. If you wanted to, say, upload clips to the web, you could make clips in WMM using the "high quality wmv small" format. Or, a somewhat less user friendly option, you could make clips with DVD2AVI and then compress them using VirtualDub.

Also note that AVI is not a format. AVI stands for audio video interleave. There are about a bajillion different ways to encode audio and video that will result in a file ending in .avi. A vid that you download that ends in .avi will usually be encoded with the Divx encoder. Most vidders don't use Divx to make clips, but some other AVI encoder, because Divx files are highly compressed and editing programs tend not to like highly compressed files.

I didn't realize all that went into making clips!

I'm not vidding... I just wanted to make clips of some scenes from movies to post for friends. There's been a discussion on my LJ lately, and it's based on that.

*blushes*

I do use Windows. I didn't realize that ripping a DVD to the computer took so long, or I wouldn't have aborted the one I was doing last night... although I was ripping a compressed version (made with DVD Shrink), and I decided that if I needed to spend that much time on it, that I would just rip the uncompressed version. The program I was using didn't allow me to clip anything out... or I couldn't figure it out.

I'll try the other program tonight, and see if it's more user friendly.

I guess I'll then have to figure out WMM - I'm assuming it came with my computer, but I've never used it before. There's always more to learn!

Thanks for all the help so far. I will probably call on you again, as I'm stepping into uncharted waters.

Ah, I figured that's what you were doing. WMM is pretty easy to figure out. Just once you import your AVI into the program, export the parts you want as either a high quality large or high quality small wmv depending on what file size you're friends are willing to download.
