ETA: My roommate pointed out to me that the appeal of the John/Rodney relationship is that both are slightly ridiculous in contrary ways, but if you put the two together you get a fairly reasonable human being. Which makes me feel like slightly less of a freak of nature.

Rodney has surface geek. He can't hide it so he wears it like a pair of brass knuckles. I generally keep my geek in my pocket, and pull it out when I feel like it. John's geek is sitting at the bottom of his stomach in a degrading synthetic capsule like cocaine in a drug runner.

...those are the best metaphors ever. So, when John and Rodney get together, you either get a reasonable person or... a geek street gang!
