With all the vividcon excitement, I thought it might be a good time to make this post. Good vidders that you won't be meeting at VividCon. You may or may not be familiar with their work depending on your fandoms/how much you stalk
vidding.
Vidder:
burntspaghetti
Website: burnt-spaghetti.net
Why I like her: Absolutely incredible use of color and light. The vidder is a fanartist (wallpapers, primarily, so far as I can tell). She also has a great sense of pacing. She cuts slower than is my style, relying on subtle changes in color intensity and light to match subtleties of the music, moreso than cutting -- and it works beautifully.
Time Is Running Out ("Time Is Running Out" by Muse)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Summary: Harry, Hermione, Remus and Sirius learn about time and obsession.
Why you should watch it: I'd seen a lot of HP vids before this one, and this was the prettiest. Glowing oranges and warm rich browns and lush greens. The colors had an emotional intensity to them that kept the vid moving where cutting would have seemed to slow in any other vid. If I remember the post she made in
vidding correctly, this was her first vid.

Jackie's Strength ("Jackie's Strength" by Tori Amos)
Fandom: Veronica Mars
Summary:
Why you should watch it: I downloaded this off
vidding because I knew the song. I was really absorbed into the story the vid told. It's a nonlinear story with flashbacks (apparently VM has a lot of those). It's a credit to the vidder that I was able to discern this in my first viewing while knowing absolutely nothing about the fandom (I wasn't even sure what fandom it was). Visually, I'd never seen anyone do what she did with this vid did. She uses the unique coloring in thes how's flashbacks, but also adds in highlights and hues of her own. The vid actually reminds me of those pretty hued icons you see around LJ. It gave this soft, almost nostalgic look to the images, which worked perfectly with the music. As for timing/rhythm/pacing -- she doesn't always put a visual transition where you hear a musical transition. She doesn't cut where you'd expect her to. And yet -- it works. I'm still trying to figure out how her cutting works so well in this vid when she doesn't seem to follow any of the rules I follow for cutting.

Vidder:
millylicious
Website: inner-demons.org
Why I like her: This vidder is she's completely fearless when it comes to trying something new. At the same time, she knows how to make a new and different idea work. I can't pin her to a certain style, so I'll just say -- she's cool! Check her out!
Counting Bodies ("Pet" remix by A Perfect Circle)
Fandom: Angel: The Series
Summary: A dark Angel/Connor/Darla study (mostly Angel/Connor).
Why you should watch it: Because it's awesome. The style is incredibly distinctive -- black and white with flashes of color at particular moments for emphasis. It works incredibly well with the vid's theme. The timing is fantastic. The vid felt like it kept going after it should have ended, but I don't know if I'd necessarily call that a flaw. It was a narrative choice and the vidder made it. I love the lengths she went to to get the mood of the vid just right for the music. I think it fits Connor perfectly.

You and Me ("You and Me" by Lifehouse)
Fandom: Roswell
Summary: A Max/Liz vid made to look like a music video from a movie soundtrack. (includes the original video)
Why you should watch it: I had fun with this vid. I liked this experiment with style. It really did feel like one of those mosic videos from a movie soundtrack, and I think it gave a nice shipper's view of the Max/Liz relationship (based on the three or so Roswell episodes I've seen). I loved the look of the vid. I think there may have been some color tweaking or messing with brightness/contrast going on.

Vidder:
sex_and_tea
Website: Gilda's Music Videos
Why I like her: Here is another vidder who has a great sense of color. She also has exquisite control over crossfades, extracting a number of different styles out of the use of this one simple effect. I wonder if she shouldn't try branching out a bit and finding out what she can do with other effects. But then, I guess we all go with what works.
We Might As Well Be Strangers ("We Might As Well Be Strangers" by Keane)
Fandom: L'Appartement
Summary: An overview of the french movie L'Appartement.
Why you should watch it: I wanted to see the movie after I watched this vid. Badly. This vid managed to get me invested in the characters and interested in the intricasies of their relationships, while at the same time leaving them all very mysterious and open ended. I want to see how this story ends. Also? It's beautiful. The overlays and fade-ins just flow together seamlessly. The rich colors and high contrast in the vid emphasize the smaller internal movements.

I Am You ("I Am You" by Depeche Mode)
Fandom: Gangster No 1
Summary: An overview of the British gangster movie.
Why you should watch it: Again, excellent use of overlays and crossfades. There were sections with fast choppy straight cuts as well. The vid is very dark, with colors in some cases bleached out, and in others, oversaturated to bright neon reds and greens and blues, like a chemical burn. This vid is intense. Evocative images. The ending gave me the chills. Just really, really cool. I've never seen the movie.

sofiaaifos
Website: LJ Memories
Why I like her: This vidder really knows how to tell as story and make it interesting. She also knows how to be daring with her story ideas, to the point that her brain's a little scary, even to me. Good rhythm and pacing. I wouldn't say it's a particularly unique kind of good, but then I don't think that's the point for her. She uses it as a tool to carry her story (whereas I tend to look at it as a sub-artform to the larger artform that is vidding).
My Heart Belongs to Daddy
Fandom: Peter Pan ("My heart belongs to daddy" performed by Marilyn Monroe)
Summary: I really don't want to spoil it.
Why you should watch it: This vidder's got balls, man. Balls. The ending? ::flails:: Did I mention balls?

Strange and Beautiful ("Strange and Beautiful (I put a spell on you)" by Aqualung)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Summary: Remus and Harry. Can be interpreted as slash or gen.
Why you should watch it:
sofiaaifos has a way of screwing with your mind whenever you watch one of her vids. And making you like it. Interpreted as slash or as gen, this vid is undeniably creepy -- and lovely. She really took advantage of some of the more compelling images in the movie. I very much got the sense that dark magic was at work throughout the vid. Again, very well carried off narrative. In a reply to one of her comments, the vidder said, "I was afraid that there wouldn't be enough Sirius material to make the vid done, but as I re-watched POA I realized that Sirius is present throughout the entire film, even if he is't there in person." After watching the vid, I very much agree with her assessment. I love when a vid puts me inside a character's head.

Website: Pegasus Nest
Why I like her: Someone who hears music the same way I do! Rhythm, pacing, timing, wheeeeeee! Well, she's not exactly the same as me, but she comes closer than most anyone except
permetaform. So, well, if you like my vids you'll probably like hers. And if you're reading this, I'm on your flist, and there's a good chance you like my vids.
Between ("Between" by Vienna Teng)
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Summary: Angelus as romance train wrecker.
Why you should watch it:
permetaform said that when she first saw this vid the impression it gave her was a series of still images. The vid doesn't play a lot with internal motion, but instead presents snapshots of characters -- scenes with little movement but great emotional intensity. the small movements are all the more striking. It weaves together beautifully the stories of the four different characters it features. It might be a pretty opaque to anyone totally unfamiliar with the fandom, but the rhythm and flow of the cutting and the choice of shots still make it visually appealing.

Toto Dies ("Toto Dies" by Nellie McKay)
Fandom: Angel: The Series
Summary: S1 retrospective/ensemble: Food, fangs, friends; Angel can't stop the attrition.
Why you should watch it: Again, this vid might be a little opaque if you're not in the fandom. I haven't seen the episodes it uses, but I've managed to glean the basic story of the episodes it covers thanks to friends in the fandom and fandom osmosis. Stylistically -- did I mention "wheee!"? I find a lot of vidders afraid to use fades in fast songs, but they work so well here!
