Got invited to join a new Gale/Randy community. Still debating with myself whether I should join. I wish someone had made a community for QaF RPF in general. Of course the majority of the fic would still be Gale/Randy, but then at least gen fic and other pairing fic would have somewhere to go, and I'd have somewhere to post/find it. I mean, I love Gale/Randy to death, but that's no reason to confine my fic writing/reading to a single pairing.
But as is typical with fandom, no one has love for the rare pairings. A lot of people read fic, I suppose, because it strengthens their love for their OTP. I got more feedback for my last Gale/Randy than for anything else I had ever posted. And it's not because it's the best thing I've ever written -- at least not in my opinion. It's because it had the most mass appeal. Gale/Randy has become a really popular pairing, but as yet, there isn't that much G/R fic available. Us few authors who do write it are sort of in the spotlight. My fic had further mass appeal in that It incorporated a lot of elements that people prefer when reading fic: humor, angst, pr0n, first time sex, etc. I imagine I would have gotten much less feedback, and probably been friended by less people (23 -- WTF?!), if not for the nearly 1500 words worth of angsty, explicit sex.
Now I didn't write my last fic thinking that it would have a lot of mass appeal. I just wrote what I wanted to write. I wrote nearly 1500 words worth of pr0n because I actually *like* to write pr0n. I wrote the fic because I knew it would be a challenge. Gale POV was really hard for me because I don't think like him at all. The fact that it had mass appeal was pretty much a happy coincidence.
When it comes to reading fic, I often just read for the pairing. But I also read just to read. I can generally read anything, regardless of pairing, as long as it's well written. It's how I got over my RPS squick so many months ago.
So, yeah. Thinking about doing some Thea fic. She's so delightfully flighty and *blonde.*
