So I was wondering today where all the shiny happy crack came from. Which is to say, I grew up on crack, and it was neither shiny nor happy. Well, okay, blood is shiny, and sometimes morbidly funny. And talking penises glisten with precum as we all know. It's the second thing you learn from Smallville fanfiction, right after "the age of consent in Kansas is 16."

Where was I?

Right. So one woman had a theory that the "state of crackfic today" is all at the fault of anime fandom. Blame them all for the wingfic and the chibis and the characters that randomly turn into penguins, isn't it cuuuuuuuute?!? I wonder what the hell kind of anime these people were into. My anime never had wings. Okay, it had chibis. It also had ninjas and pirates and genderfuck and incest and mass murder. Multiple instances of mass murder. I don't know where this picture of anime as shiny happy crack came from. STOP READING GRAVITATION, ALL OF YOU.

Where was I?

So I was clipping for my Weir vid today. And staring at one of my crackfic. The one where Rodney gets turned into a wraith and then impregnates a hive queen. Well, actually it would be more accurate to say a hive queen decides to use him for breeding purposes and he goes along with it because he doesn't want to die. Also, she's blonde, so whatevs.

I know what you're thinking, and I was completely sober when I came up with this. In fact, I've only written one story drunk, and it wasn't even that crack-y.

Where was I?

genderfuck

I heard! Ranma 1/2! (Yes, so I'm slow. Shuddup.) Makes me wish I were into anime beyond Noir. Noir was awesome -- the score, the slow and almost dreamy quality, plus the visuals.

The one where Rodney gets turned into a wraith and then impregnates a hive queen.

Okay, clearly you don't trust me at all. And no, I'm not kidding. I never kid about what I plan to write, though I do generally make things sound more comedic than they are actually going to be.

You don't think the wraith are hot?

::frowns::

How sad for you. You know at least three of my stories involve wraith sex in some way shape or form.

I'M JUST WEIRD THAT WAY!

(They do? Hrm. Wait, is it possible that I haven't read all your stories? Link me!)

No, not weird. Your opinion here is very generic. I just think it's sad. They have so much potential for porn. I mean, the brain is the biggest sex organ and, well, mindrape. And the strength gives the potential for really rough sex, not to mention hand jobs mean something entirely different when you can drain/give life through them. Not to mention I thnk John being forced to kneeeeeeel is one of the hottest images the show has ever given me.

Wait, is it possible that I haven't read all your stories?

My stories that I have in progress. I haven't actually finished/posted anythign in something like a year. Though I think I have snippets and excerpts of at least one lying around my journal somewhere. The one where Rodney turns into a siren, and sirens are basically some Lantean experiment gone wrong that's a kind of wraith predecessor.

Hell YES.

*sigh* My desire to see John on the floor and with Rodney's cock in various orifices just ain't funny.

And I agree about the mind thing -- telepathy and everyting surrounding it is a beloved cliché of mine -- but just not about the sexiness of the Wraith. Not sure it's generic at all, but then again, who ever wants to be generic? Unique beautiful snowflake etc. pp.

Anyway, for me it's both

a) the fact I don't find bad guys attractive, no matter how good they may look on the outside -- unless they show their potential to be good as well, I just don't feel anything for them (well, not anything positive). That doesn't exclude either assassins or Gregory House, mind you. Still, layered characters I need, and except for the last Wraith we've seen in Common Ground, none of them come close to qualifying.

b) and the fact I'm shallow: the Wraith are constructs, and maybe that's just because dude, fictional thing, a man-made TV show, but I just look at them, these mismatched parts -- elf hair and sharp teeth, tall slender bodies and strange welts and ridges -- and pieces and think, Eww! Guess that's generic, all right; I'm sure it's what the writers had in mind.

Yeah, think I remember that....

Ah, but I must clarify. I'm not really talking about telepathy kink here. When I say I like mindrape -- my emphasis is on the rape part. I like the inherent and dangerous power dynamic associated with wraith telepathy, that it is used as a means of coersion. Basically, I like how the wraith have the potential to *break* characters, and adding a sexual element to the breaking makes it all the more appealing.

I don't find bad guys attractive, no matter how good they may look on the outside -- unless they show their potential to be good as well

It's been my experience that protagonists can be just as one-dimensional as villains. It's bad writing in both cases, and I dislike it in both.

I love the wraith because I see that they are layered, that they do show potential for good (not towards humans, necessarily, since humans are *food*, but towards each other definitely). I'm certain that the slow revealing of different sides of the wraith has been *purposeful* on the parts of the writers. Common Ground was simply the climax of an arc the writers have been building since the beginning of season 2.

But then, I seem to have the unpopular opinion in this fandom that not everything good the writers come up with is an amazing fluke and they might actually know what the hell they're doing.

My bitter is leaking out again, I know.

I just look at them, these mismatched parts -- elf hair and sharp teeth, tall slender bodies and strange welts and ridges -- and pieces and think, Eww!

I've found that things so obviously designed to be disturbing don't disturb me. I see the intention, and that's the part I connect with, the part that engages my emotions. I look at the end result more intellectually, in terms of how well I think the intention was executed. I find the wraith compelling because I find the idea behind the wraith compelling. The fact that their various attributes seem incongrous only make them more beautiful to me. They are a melding of extremes, and that's fascinating.

I'd like to say I don't dig the idea of a character's ability to break someone else, but of course, my show choices and character preferences betray me. Still, physically and/or psychologically and/or mentally overpowering somebody else is one thing, a sexual element is another -- it usually doesn't work for me, although it can, provided there's minimal *bodily* harm and pain.

It's been my experience that protagonists can be just as one-dimensional as villains. It's bad writing in both cases, and I dislike it in both.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Latter-season-Spike, Wesley, Jack Bristow, or half the BSG crew definitely have enough darkness in them to be fascinating despite their protagonist...stati.

they do show potential for good (not towards humans, necessarily, since humans are *food*, but towards each other definitely

I haven't really seen much of that, to be honest, so I'm curious -- we've seen, and I only count inter-Wraith behaviour, aggression , betrayal, feeding on one's own kind (if changed through therapy), servitude (the faceless drones serving the Wraith as lesser creatures)....

Must agree that our Common Ground Wraith, so aptly *not* given a nickname to humanise and de-power him, showed honour and loyalty, though.

My bitter is leaking out again, I know.

::hands you a towel::

No, seriously, I get that feeling of yours, although mostly due to my Alias fan period. Or my fellow Alias fen, really. *eg*

I'm thoroughly enjoying SGA these days -- plot-wise and characterisation-wise.

I see the intention, and that's the part I connect with, the part that engages my emotions. I look at the end result more intellectually, in terms of how well I think the intention was executed.

Interesting.

As for the Wraith, I see the premise, and I see the execution, but my visceral reaction exists on a different level. Understanding doesn't inhibit or even greatly influence my freak-outs -- you have to be very, very cheesy to not scare or appall me: I CHECKED UNDER MY BED AFTER THE X-FILES, FOR GOD'S SAKE! SUPERNATURAL SCARES ME!

And as for the aestheticism of the Wraith -- yeah, I see your sense of appreciation but don't feel anything like it.

Your shame on this matter confuses me. Don't be ashamed! You like what you like! No judgement here.

it usually doesn't work for me, although it can, provided there's minimal *bodily* harm and pain.

I always prefer my character breaking to be psychological. If it's too physical, it just feels like a gore fest, but I love well written psychological trauma and dysfunction. I love the extremes of the emotional range.

SUPERNATURAL SCARES ME!

::laughs at you::

::laughs at you SO HARD::

::clears throat::

Yeah. It doesn't really scare me at all.

Clearly this person has only ever seen Pokemon. And maybe Ranma.

Dude, the first anime I watched was Akira, and from there it was tentacle rape, mecha, and kickass superpowered schoolgirls all the way. With invisible penises here & there.

Hey, why isn't there more "invisible penis" fic?

I think that sums up a lot of badly written slash. Isn't character X a great big h0r who hits on everything that walks? Why is he all meek legs-crossed? It's like his cock just vanished!

Sorry, m'dear, that one's from my own brain.

If I ever write a badfic I'll use that phrase just for you. And you have my full permission to steal it should you feel the need.

Seriously, there's an anime (well, prolly several) that featured "chick giving a bj to invisible male!parts" and there were sparkles.

Sparkles. The wet stuff sparkled and it was soft focus and I think everything was pastel. It was like it was sponsored by the creators of My Little Pony.

No, I can't remember which anime it was, sorry.

Sparkles. Silvery sparkles winking at you. Especially on the bridge part.

Dude.
